Endurance/long distance Hoof boot advice needed.

Hi all, I am looking for some advice on hoof boots. They are for a Welsh Cob with round feet 140mm by 140mm, he has been barefoot for around 6 months now and doing very well on 2-3 hr local riding over all surfaces with it especially since I started doing weekly trims. I am however planning a long (dare I say epic) ride with overnight camping in the Angus Glens and there will be a lot of stoney forest tracks which I feel will be beyond his barefoot capabilities at this stage.

I had contacted one UK supplier who suggested Easyboot Trails but being an over the hairline boot I fear they would sore him as they are only recommended for 25miles a week/1.5hrs a day, I'll covering +25 miles in a day. With this in mind I thought about the Easyboot Gloves or Renegades, unfortunately I cannot seem to find a supplier for the Renegades in the UK.

Gloves would seem to be the logical choice at least that was my conclusion, but the advice from the suppliers threw me somewhat having explained the kind of distances I would be covering yet they say Trails. I have to say it has left me reluctant to ask any for further advice from them, hence my post here. :confused:

When measuring for the Gloves I am also unsure as to whether the measurement is taking from the ground contacting edge of the foot IE outer edge of the sole/inner wall or do you measure the widest point of the foot IE the outer hoof wall where the bevel stops?

Also can you used pads in the gloves?
 
I know of a couple of peeps who don't post on here that do endurance and are experienced with boots. They do post on EGB forum...

Many thanks for the link, I'll contact your friend she certainly seems to have the experience to answer my questions, I'm impressed by how big an area she covers, :eek: I can't get a trimming that will travel to me even though there are trimmers in the next county. :rolleyes:

I have a pair of the renegade boots, I chose them over the Easyboots as my horse has sensitive skin and they looked less clumpy.

I haven't used them much, only 10 - 15km at a time, they haven't fallen off, rubbed or twisted round but they do get gravel in them (I'm on dirt roads). People say this is a problem with other types, too.

I got mine in Australia but before theywere stocked here people just used to order them from the US. They are very popular for endurance here, I believe.

My horse's hooves are fairly circular, too, which influenced my choice. I have added thin Easyboot pads which stay in fine, supposed to cushion the frog I was told.

Lol, today at work thinking about boots I had decided just to go with the Easyboot gloves, now I am thinking about the Renegades again lol. I'm worried about being stung with high customs duty if I buy direct from the US, plus they could take long enough to come. Maybe I should just toss a coin lol.
 
:D I've went ahead and ordered a pair of Renegades from the US, here's hoping I don't get stung with custom charges/import tax!:eek:

Well, I hope they work well for you, I feel responsible now!

One good thing about the renegades is that, being compact, they will fit into a small bag so less to carry when the horse is not wearing them.

Which color did you get? My mare is bright chestnut and all the colors clashed, I got red in the end so I could find them if they flew off!

If they don't work it will totally your fault porkchop's!! Nah they were originally my first choice, it was really only their unavailability in the UK that had me considering the Easyboot Gloves.

The compact design was one of the many features that drew me to them as well, like you say they will take little room in the saddle bags when they are not needed.

I only had the choice of Copper or Black in Cuillins size 2ww, he is liver chestnut but still went for the Copper ones, if they clash really bad I'll just cut eye holes in a feed sack and he can wear it over his head :D
 
my concern re the gloves would be that they are more for hooves that are longer than they are wide - ie narrow hooves.
I chose cavallo boots for a mare i ride who has very round feet. I then bought the easy care pastern wraps as the cavallo ones slip and ride up. I don't do long distance rides but have not had any form of rubbing on a 2 hour ride (only used on fronts)
If the horse is used to being out without boots/shoes and is coping well then you could probably get away with covering several miles before putting the boots on (unless you are going to get the hooves/pastern particularly dirty)
P.S have just realised you've decided on renegades - will be interesting to hear how you get on ;)
