I am going to do my gold d of e on horse back soon, so need some advice. I have to do four days of up to 8 hours in the saddle.

What sort of jodphurs do you use? I just have ordinary ones - are these likely to be ok?

Secondly, if i do a lot of trotting, on of my achillies heels starts to hurt (well the tendon down the back), can I bandage me up like i would a horse?

I don't know much about the gold duke of edinburgh award, is this done on your own horse? I doubt there will be lots of trotting for the sake of the horses, I would expect it to be walking or cantering on the good ground.

You should probably take a support bandage to put on your ankle, I would probably start out with it on rather than wait til the ankle starts to hurt.

Your normal jods should be fine, it's what your are used to that matters, you don't want to change anything big a few days before the ride!

TBH, if you're spending up to 32 hours in the saddle over 4 days I would definitely think about getting a pair of riding tights. They are infinitely more comfortable than ordinary jodhpurs. If you know any endurance riders see if you can borrow a pair of flexible stirrups as well - if you're going to be doing a lot of trotting they absorb concussion and your ankle will be less likely to hurt.

See the website for Performance Equestrian for more details of the above - www.performance-equestrian.com

One other thing - if you normally ride in long boots, you might want to think about jodhpur boots (or similar short boots) and half chaps.

Good luck with the DofE!
