Try doing a google search on Sport Endurance or Equine Ramblers. There's another one too, I think it's called Endurance GB. Sport Endurance have quite a lot of fixtures around the UK including pleasure and training rides aswell as competitive ones. I'm looking into it myself although I haven't been to any fixtures yet.
www.endurancegb.co.uk is the place to start. As well as national rides, there will be a local group in your area as well that will put on pleasure/social rides approx once a month. These will have distances of 10 or 20 miles. There will be a minimum & maximum speed even for pleasure rides. Your horse needs to be reasonably fit and used to riding with other horses. If you start doing some of the competitive rides, your horse will be vetted (heart rate taken & trot up for soundness) before the ride and 30 mins after the ride. Competitive rides vary in distances up to 100 miles in a day! Even though you are not in our area, have a look at our websites www.angliandistanceriders.co.uk and www.adrphotos.co.uk which will give you an idea. Hope you have a go - you are bound to enjoy it.
My friend is an endurance rider - very serious competitor, she should qualify for the GB junior team this year and be heading out to Dubai. I am seeing her tomorrow - I can ask her to give you some info. Is there something specific you need to know?
Basically you yourself need to have good working knowledge of how to balance a horse's diet and how to get and keep a horse perfectly fit. You will need to be very fit yourself. You will need a very capable horse - a lot of people use arabs, my friend likes an arab X conemmara - her's is amazing. The big rides she does cover 150 miles. And you will need specialist tack as well as a supportive team of people who will meet you at point through the ride to revive you and your horse.
I'm sure Kay would be happy to give you any more info...
Thanks for the info.
Metalmare thanks alot, your friend sounds very dedicated! Its just something i don't know much about not anything specific really. Will look on the websites. Hope your friend does well in dubai xx
If she gets there that is. Fingers crossed she will. She's doing well and was mentioned in H&H last year, although I missed that. She's not a horse and hound member but if she gets chance this evening I think she's going to register and see if she can find this post. But if you do have any questions I will forward them onto her.
PS - don't expect an endurance horse to cost the sort of money that other specialist competition horses would. You could get a winner for under 2K if you buy a youngster and you know what qualities you're looking for. A lot has to do with what you do after in terms of diet and fitness and your own commitment.
