Endurance...would my TB cope?

What was brilliant was bringing her 7 year old son out on his first pleasure ride sunday at St Morwennas. He's as enthusiastic as his mum!

start em young!
Isnt it amazing how many discussions about endurance riding always seem to end in the great pant debate!

I cant imagine why anyone would think going commando on an endurance ride is a good idea!!:eek: certainly wouldnt dream of it wearing a 'normal' pair of breeches/jods - too many seams/zips to even consider - maybe in a pair of riding tights with the padded bum bits but even then... no thank you very much! a nice pair of big pants for me every time!

Nope - normal, cheap jods from Robinsons :p.

Heat is the enemy....so less padding and layers keeps you cool and less likely to chafe.

Don't knock it till you've tried it :D

haha! think I'll stick to my big pants and riding tights! super comfy! - although no longer do any endurance!

Ive just spoken to my farrier just to double check if he thinks his feet will cope and he thinks it is a really good idea so am def gong to give it a go. Didnt ask him about the pant situation, thought it might be a bit odd...

Because when you have done some endurance you begin to appreciate just what an important issue it is

I also wear two pairs of socks (on my feet ;):D) to prevent rubbing or if it's hot I put tape around my last two toes and put a large, padded plaster on my heels.

And get a bra with wide and comfy straps.

At the THONG GATE ride, I also used a normal bra. It rubbed raw lesions around my sides

Other tips for humans is to eat plenty of protein after the ride (or a protein shake) to prevent muscle soreness.

My personal 'swear by' is using my vibration plate. I get TERRIBLE saddle sore (muscular aches - not actual sores :o) and this means I feel 100% the next day rather than lame.

But I understand it's a little 'out there' :o

Might add the advice to avoid falling into the trap of "we're doing endurance now , so I need to give lots of competition mixes" as this will just ruin her feet and make the soles flat and thin.

Fibre, fibre, fibre and oil....and SALT :D

Yep, I did some with my old mare many years ago. Took feed company advice and ended up giving her so much performance mix she could have done a couple of hundred miles.

First event I did the other riders put me right :D :D Great fun would have loved to do it again.

You might find his feet actually improve the more you do. My boy's feet grow really well when he is in proper hard work, and we have much less trouble. He is also just on grass and high fibre nuts.

Get a water bottle that you can attach to the saddle. If you do not have a crew you could dying of thirst by the end of 20 miles.

I use to ride a seven eights thoroughbred who competed in Endurance for many years. She won several Golden Horshoes at Exmoor (100 miles over 2days) and was a member of the British Team who won Gold in the World Endurance Championships in Stockholm. It is not only Arabs who excel at Endurance! Go for it

Back on the knicker debate... always, always, always also take a spare pair of knickers so that when you finish the ride in pouring rain, soaked to the skin, (or get completely dunked in a deep river crossing, as happened to me once!) you've got something dry to change into.

After my river crossing episode I had a complete change of clothes back at the trailer, fortunately, except for spare knickers, so I still had to go round with an uncomfortable wet patch on my bum for the rest of the day!

Poor you! I wasn't talking to your crew guy at St Morwennas was I? He was telling me his rider did an endurance ride & rather go round to the bridge opted for the straight route across a small ish but deep stream. Person she was riding with jumped it fine, she went to pop it & horse stopped propelling her over its head into stream for a total dunking!:D Rest of ride was spent in uncomfortable soggy state..

Reading this thread with great interest, having purchased a 6 yr old arab mare in march. She is bred for endurance, has a low resting heart rate (28), and has the right attitude, being neither a stresshead (unless she's out in the field on a windy day!!) nor a slouch.
I am still building a relationship with her, and as she was only backed last year, she is still a bit green, so am intending on starting her indurance career after the winter.
I have brought a beautiful Arabian Saddle Company Solstice endurance saddle for her, the most comfy saddle I think I've ridden in, but will be taking the 'pants' tips on board also!!
I was hoping to keep her barefoot, but have had to have fronts put on as she was wearing her toes slightly with the increased roadwork, her backs are fine though.

I'm in the Cotswold area, and I think I will take a visit to Cranham to see what is what.

Hi pip

Sam ended up in the river at Tilford a couple of years ago.

ihotse. I would also pop down and see the Ridgeway Ride at Barbary Castle in August. It is a two day ride with FEI classes and the inter regionals
. A great ride to enter too.

Hi Pauline, yes, Barbury Castle is not far from me at all, and one that I have pencilled in for next year!! How easy is it to find buddies to pair up with on those first rides? I think it would be good for the first couple of outings to be able to ride with a more experienced rider, so you don't go too fast or slow.
Can't wait!!

I've just had a look at the site, and may well try to come along to the Christmas ride. There is also a ride at Tintern in Sept that I may well aim to do a NCR. Might well see you there!!
