Energizer for small paddock under £115.......

I have this one which is excellent - 12v option allows for varying pulse rate but very useful ability to easily switch to D cell power - great for travelling or just for taking the battery away to charge it! I've actually switched to just using D cells as they last several weeks and are much easier than lugging the 12v back and forth to charge it.

I have this one, its now a good 8years old and going strong off a Halfords £50 leisure battery.

I wouldn't recommend the Fenceman DP350B. I have one, and it is a wimpy energiser so I basically don't use it. The output energy is only 0.25J off a 12V battery, and if you go with the internal D cells, that goes down to 0.1J. I can literally hold on to the leadout on mine and not be bothered by the zap. For a really portable small energizer (I use it for travelling pens) run off internal D cells, I found the Hotline Shrike to deliver a better zap (0.3J). Still, I wouldn't use one for semi-permanent fencing, but go with more oomph.

The two above (Gemini, MVF D1000) both have much better output, 1.2J and 1J respectively. Though my personal experience with the Gemini 120 isn't good - they keep breaking on me, and I'm just getting my second replacement under warranty within two years as I type this. However, apparently other people get on really well with them, and I can't fault the warranty or retailer (UK countrystore), who have been excellent. And the Gemini delivers a very decent zap!

I've not had a gemini, but have had a very old and newer merlin without issues though the output isn't as big :). Also very pleased with our MVF one :)

funny how I've not found that at all-and I have hairy natives who respect it. Its all down to how you configure your fencing and the tape/rope that you use-I've used this energiser on a one acre paddock with no mishaps (ie escaped ponies).

You know, I have wondered a time or two if my unit is faulty because it is so weak, but surely I can't have that much bad luck! I use a decent earth stake setup, and have measured output without load (right from the clamp, no fence attached to confuse the picture), and it just doesn't pack much of a punch. Then I read the specs on it and was less surprised - the output energy is really pretty low, especially off the D cells. I find it ok off the 12V battery, but not great. I think I get around 2000-3000V on the fence meter, if I remember correctly. I'm usually aiming for 8000V plus.

I had a fenceman and agree that it's not a very powerful energiser at only 0.25 joules output. I currently have the hotline Gemini 120 and highly rate it. It has 1.2 joules output and I have had mine for about 5 years with no problems whatsoever.
