Hi, my mare had her first bout of laminitis in april, after injuring her check ligament in february and couldnt be exercised! we have been back in work now for 6 weeks, just in walk, gradually increasing the distance. all is going well but i find she just has NO energy, she would always normally do a very active walk, now she is asleep then will see something and spook etc etc. Vet has advised 8 weeks in walk, 8 weeks in trot, she is on restricted grazing and fed hi fi lite with some hi fi cubes and msm for ligament. Are there any feeds anyone can suggest that may give her more energy without laminitis risks?? balancer such as lo cal?? I am aware that the more work we do, the fitter she will get, but she just is so life less and although i am worried about the lami risks, i also do not want to ask too much of her and risk injury if her diet isnt supported efficiently. Any advice greatly received! thanks.

You need to be so careful with laminitics. My lad who also had the dreaded L, was also very slow after being the nice forwards Welsh D that he was. He is fed Blue Chip Lamilite with Safe and Sound, but he was still lethargic. So I had actually got some Nupafed Staying Power for my OH's horse in competition. I pinched some and the results are astounding...much more like himself and no risk of the dreaded L word. The lady is delighful to chat to, and I will now keep my lad on it too. Hope this helps you too.

I use Baileys lo-cal, speedibeet, & hi-fi lite as his regular feed & add oil (plain old veggie oil) when we need a little something extra. Usually when he is a little on the slim side or as a build up before competitions.

Thankyou everyone. Gilbey...so have you spoke to the company with regards to your laminitic horse? i take it you have as you say she is a delightful lady! what did she say?

My 32 year old had low iron so was on NAF EnerG, did the trick, he had lami bout 5 years ago, I checked with company and they said safe so you could give that a try as long as its not pain related
