I have a four year old cob that has been backed for the summer and doing well however, we have hit a bit of a problem! He seriously lacks in energy, now i know the breed itself doesnt always mean that they are going to be really switched on and vibrant but this is quite bad.

We have changed his feed to Enduro 100 which is a saracen feed designed for endurance horses to give stamina and energy but it hasnt made any effect on him at all! Other horses on the yard are buzzing on this feed apparently but not my boy! He has been vet checked and it isnt a physical problem at all, just his personality!

I am now looking into an alternative energy feed and/or supplement for him and wondered if anyone had any recommendations?

I dont mind something that makes him a little more "fizzy" as at the moment he is so laid back he is nearly horizontal!!

Thank you :)

A friend bought a similar pony because he was so chilled he was great once she wanted to do more he wasn't suitable because no amount of oats etc would make him forward going, he was always happy at his own pace. Is he the same out hacking? Does he ever show an interest in his work?

Well yes, this is the problem, i love him dearly but he is too quiet for what i like! He is better hacking but only marginally...he is still very relaxed!

Well I think its just they way he is! I have one exactly the same. The only time he is forward going is having a very forward going horse in front!

Wouldn't waste your money on any "energy" feeds tbh, only other thing I can suggest is to go for long faster hacks to get his fitness up.

The weather has been very mild and mine has a thick coat already, that doesn't help either

If he is 4 and a cob he is probably still growing, so rather than feed rocket fuel or do lot of fast work, you'd probably be better off turning him away for a bit now he's been backed and brought on. Can make a huge difference.
