Engagement ring - how to do it?

My OH proposed on Easter Sunday, having picked the ring himself. It's perfect. He is another who had it made up at an independant jewellers (he bought the diamond and then had the jeweller set it) and I knew nothing of it.

Mine is palladium - couldn't afford platinum & was warned against white gold by the jeweller.

The jeweller is also horsey so my ring was designed with that in mind :)
 
I personally wouldn't risk chosing the ring. My husband has bought me some fabulous jewellery in the past, but also some real horrors!!! If he'd made a mistake with that ring it would have been awful. As it was my mum helped me choose and I still love it 18 years later. The old chap is pretty fabulous still too!
 
OP - Regardless of fake/real ring, PLEASE hide a camera somewhere so we can all see her reaction :D What a thoughtful proposal though, I reckon you should chose the real deal though!
 
My OH turned up at the yard to propose...I was just letting the farrier out of the gate when he popped up, in a suit, flowers in one hand...mousemat in the other!!!! threw the mousemat on the floor (he is an IT geek) knelt on it (as yard pretty muddy) and proposed!

I think you should go fake and let her choose (but that is only because every time my OH buys me jewellery I haven't LOVED it.. your taste is probably better!)

I proposed to my OH (male) with an engraved ring box (personal message relating to when I asked him to move in) and a small joke present inside so that he'd have the full 'proposal experience' so to speak but also get input into choosing.

I also helped choose my ring... although he hid it when it arrived so I thought it was coming and then surprise proposed back to me :-)

If you know the size and type (are you sure?!!) she likes, I would buy the ring yourself.

I was engaged to someone else years ago, and we chose the ring together, I found it a bit embarassing - I felt awful at the cost!

With my husband, we chatted about getting engaged, and we went shopping together looking at rings I liked. I told him I wanted a surprise proposal. He then had a ring made up from an independant designer, and proposed six months later (just when I was thinking he'd changed his mind!) I like that I have no idea what it cost (he still won't tell me to this day!).

Love the headcollar idea, but make sure its not somewhere the horse could reach it and eat it!! That would be scary allround!

From my own experience, I would have preferred to choose my own ring, because the one I have is too impractical to wear. The diamond is set upon a raised mount. It's impossible to wear gloves over it, it catches and snags clothes, and the last time I wore it to a dinner I somehow managed to cut my face with it. I don't have the heart to tell my fiancé I don't like it - but I don't wear it very often because of those reasons.

Someone else mentioned that if she chooses it she'll know the price - but that's not necessarily the case. If you let the shop know beforehand, when you arrive, they'll be able to bring out the rings within your budget and not disclose prices to her.

Agree with this. I too have a ring which was very expensive but catches on things so I hardly wear it :(
Love the fake ring and then choose your own idea, and perfect to have the jeweller set out a tray of possible ones within your budget

Well I had to change my plan as I had a riding accident a few days before I planned to propose and broke my collar bone (see another thread) meaning I couldn't drive anywhere on my own :(

In the end I decided to make a cushion for her (she has them all over the house) and sewed the words "WILL U MARRY ME" onto it. I managed to nip out of the house during my recovery whilst she was out and pick the ring up on the bus. Because I knew she'd wonder where I'd been, I took the cushion with me and sewed the ring onto the cushion in the "U". When I got back she asked what was in the rucksack I had on and I told her to look inside. She accepted and loves the ring :)

Oh I've only just seen this (been a bit busy with a foal and then breaking some ribs myself!) but I'd just like to offer my huge congratulations and I hope your collar bone is well and truly healed now! :D

Thats a good idea because I wouldn't know whether or not i'd want to choose my own or leave it to my OH. Depends on the OH I suppose and my trust in them. I'd like to say i'm 20 and certainly have never been with anyone i'd want to marry.

P.S love the idea of tying it to a head collar.
 
Be careful where u tie it. My pony had field key tied under her chin where the lead rope goes and managed to get it off and nearly eat it! Way romantic though. Can't see my oh being that spot on about it.
