english hackamores?

Hi,

I have used hackamores for many years and have found them very effective. They are useful to get the horse thinking and give them a break from a bit! I have always found they have great respect for them while softening the back and quarters.

The horse i used to ride had a hackamore (but after i rode him!) because bits gave him mouth sores, so he had one on him! I dont think it was for him though because they couldnt stop him init

! But it does work on other horses!

I have used them a lot in the past. With some customizing that suited my horses.

You will need some very short cheekpieces, or a slip head.
I hate the rigid nosepiece, so did my arabs, so I replaced the thick, padded bit that is attached to the nose'band' with a roll of sheepskin cut from my trusty charity sheepskin jacket.
I also replaced the leather curb strap with a very wide, thick linked dressage curb.(Not all that easy to get hold of)

See if you can try one first before you buy, although they are not expensive, and have a test run in an enclosed space first, nothing like being tanked off with because the horse doesn't like it/listen/understand what you want.

Good Luck.

thanks! will give it a go under the eye of my instructor! have a headshaking horse and have done EVERYTHING(back saddle vet teeth nosebags allergies bits) else to eradicate i know it may be a case of re educating her but I thought this might be a long shot..

I used one on Sandy as she had an occult wolf tooth that had fractured (ouch

) The vet thought she was too old to put through removal of the tooth, so I rode her in a Blair Pattern hackamore and really padded up both the nose piece and the curb piece. She went really nicely in it and was very happy to be tacked up from that point on! I would just check your brakes and steering in a school before you venture out for the first time!)
