I have a 3 year old English Setter who has been slightly lame behind for about a week.

Took him to the vets today who said that he is sore around both of his hips and sent him home with anti inflammitries and said to bring him back in a week.

Are they prone to Hip problems? Being a young dog I am a bit worried that he is having problems so soon?

Hip scored? Not sure what that is?

He was a present from my parents so not sure but my parents would probably know as they bought him direct from the breeder.

Hip Scoring is a scheme set in place in by the British Veterinary Association and the Kennel Club to try to reduce a problem called hip dysplasia. Dogs and bitches that are to be used for breeding have their hips x-rayed and the pictures are sent to a BVA panel for assesment. A score is then allocated for that particular dogs hips. The LOWER the score the better. The panel also provide a chart with the average scores for each breed and so a comparison can be made for each individual dog to the breed in general. Ideally only dogs with a low score would then be used for breeding and therefore less likely to pass on poor hip conformation to the next generation.
The scheme is also in place for elbow dysplasia.

Thanks, thats really helpful.

I would like to think that his parents were scored then as he was not cheap and apparently he has good breeding (have to say I don't really know much about dog breeding etc).

Will ask my parents tonight if they have any info.

I had an English Setter who from the age of about 9 suffered bad hips and osteoarthritis (sorry spelling!). They are renowned for having bad hips but not at that age!
Hope he will be ok - I miss my boy so so much (RIP Feb 06) im now lumbered with an insane Gordon Setter!
