English - Western riding converts

Yes I can't see why we don't have Extreme Trail riding in the U.K. with our weather it would seem like comon sense! :D

Re the bits - you start off in an ordinary snaffle, the idea of the curb is that it is very light contact/aid so you hardly touch the reins. Same old story - the bit is as severe as the hands holding the reins.

As for the western saddle, the first time I cantered my horse when he was newly broken in he happened to be in a western saddle. He gave the most enormous buck (I can remember looking down his shoulder and thinking how far away the ground was!) and I was thrown out of the saddle and landed with my stomach on the horn. Hurray, as least I didn't fall off .............. I ended up with a nasty bruise on my stomach but he never bucked again.

I can remember a "round the table discussion" when we decided that is IS possible to be thrown off a western saddle, and if it happens it is likely to hurt!

I think everyone should have a go at western.
