Hi all,

My JR was diagnosed a while ago with an enlarged liver. In herself she seems ok, loves being out and about, eats well etc. however she is becoming more restless at night, not being able to stay in one place for too long, general discomfort etc. I have read about milk thistle, and would like to start giving it to her, can anyone recommend whether powder or liquid form is better, also what sort of dose should I give a 9kg dog? Any advice and experience would be great to hear. Will probably buy off amazon as I am not in UK and don't have a health food shop nearby.

If you have a look on Dorwest Herbs website or contact them, they will tell you how much to give. Milk thistle definitely worked for my dog (tablet form) - try Denamarin too (you can get it on Amazon), it is expensive but I'm having brilliant results with another dog that has underlying cushings disease which was affecting his liver. :)

Hi Dougal9, great thanks I have ordered some off their site through Amazon, thanks. What was your dogs problem, and how do you feel they have improved?

Unfortunately he passed away - he had a lot going on, but it wasn't anything to do with his liver in the end. We started on the Milk thistle when he was diagnosed with cushings disease and this brought his liver enzymes down to near normal levels. My other dog (still with us) has underlying cushings, again with high liver enzymes we tried him on the milk thistle which worked for a little while but when they went back up again we started him on Denamarin and so far so good. Hope it works for your dog :)

Hi, oh sorry to hear that :( glad other dog is improving, will google denamarin as have t heard of that, thanks for the help and advice! X

My pony had liver damage for most of this pasy 8 months and last bloods were really down after months of going up.

She is on Milk thistle from D&H the dried thistle as I prefer it and smells lovely http://www.dodsonandhorrell.com/product/milk-thistle
