My elderly mare lives out 24/7. She isn't normally badly affected by fly bites but yesterday evening I noticed one of her teats was hard and swollen and had several oozing fly bites. This morning the swelling was very large and quite hot. I bathed it in cool water and put some cream on it. This evening the swelling seems cooler but is still as large. She's got a slight swelling to her other teat and another huge swelling on the inside of her back leg. She doesn't seem too bothered and is happy to stand loose in the field while I bathe the swellings. Is there anything else I can do? Would piriton help? How many for a 22 year old 400kg pony?

Anyone? The swelling on the inside of her hind leg is nearly the size of my fist and isn't going down.

Be careful off feet. Caused an allergic reaction in my tb.

Vet for helping to get inflammation down then I would put some battles fly cream, bright yellow stuff, round the area. Keeps the flys off my boys sheath.

I've bathed it in cool water and hibiscrub and plastered it in summer fly cream for tonight. The vet is coming to see her tomorrow.

Hibiscrub is not the best thing imho it is used to clean skin wounds, but most vets use betadine these days, if the skin is not broken I don't see the point, just a mild soap solution would keep area clean. Ask vet for is advice.

Sounds like she has a nasty infection if it has swollen to that size so yes definitely vet. Agree that Hibiscrub is really best for open wounds I then put sudacreme on afterwards. Hope she will be OK. Flies are a nightmare not just for our poor horses but we also get bitten to pieces when up there.

The vet has been. He doesn't think it is infected. He went into a complicated explanation about the lymphatic system which was a bit beyond me. She's on bute for a few days and needs to keep moving to help it all drain. He said not to use hibiscrub and to apply hot compresses but as long as it doesn't get harder or hot and she is happy for me to touch the swelling the vet thinks it should all go down in 7-10 days. Thanks for the advice from everyone, much appreciated.
