I * think there were people here who had experienced this when I first posted about it which was at least 6 months ago, probably longer.

Spud was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate as above a while ago now.
He had some tablets and I was told chances were the problem would return in 6 months time.

Recently he has started trying to hump my other dog when they are playing.
This is the only thing that’s changed but I’m wondering is this a symptom that his prostate has gone a bit wrong again? He didn’t do it last time. It’s not constant or terrible (he stops when told or distracted)

He does have a check up booked in a fortnight because he’s really pretty good in himself right now and my usual vet is on holiday.
Just wondered in the mean time if this is so do with the prostate or what on earth he’s up too!

Symptoms of prostate trouble usually show as an unusual gait - walking with stiff hind legs and a roach back, and frequent peeing. The latter is not always picked up in a male dog! Has he been neutered since the diagnosis? Could well be there is a bitch in heat within scent range.

Yes that was the symptoms at first. I just wondered as the timing is about right if this was another symptom or not.

No he’s still got his balls! He’s my partners dog and he is very very anti castration. We had agreed to do the course of pills and see what happened, have a rethink if the issue came back. If this isn’t it than so far he seems ok

We seem to be situated on a regular dog walking loop and some of the guys on the farm have bitches so yes could well have been one around.

Most older dog prostate enlargements are hormone dependant...So the tablets were probably to suppress his testosterone levels. The fact he is trying to hump everything therefore likely means his testosterone levels are rising again, and unfortunately that almost certainly means his prostate will enlarge again, and symptoms will return.

I'm afraid the only permanent solution is castration!

Agree with Quizzie. Castration is the cure! Please reassure your partner that he has nothing to fear and you won't come after him next! But seriously - yes, prostate problems are hormone dependent, and at ten years old, it is unlikely to change your dog's personality. Maybe have a chat with your vet and decide which way to go. Sounds like you have been using chemical castration for the past few months anyway.

When one of our dogs' prostate became enlarged, the symptoms were problems with his bowel movements. We had him neutered then. He was ten years old.
This - one of mine had prostrate trouble, ended up with a hernia his only symptom was straining when passing a poo, wee was all normal and fine, we had him castrated aged 7 and the hernia reparied, he seems fine again now.
