Epilspsy in dogs

Has anyone any experience of this please. My dog had a fit yesterday and vet says it sounds like epilepsy. Would be interested to hear any one elses experience of it as I found it very worrying. Thanks

There is some interesting information on there.
I know of two friends who have dogs with epilepsy and both dogs lead normal lives. One does obedience and the other does flyball.
The degree of the epilepsy is different in the 2 I know. One rarely has a fit and the other seems to have periods when she has several fits in a short space of time. Both are on medication.
What breed is your dog? The ones I know are both collies.
Obviously definitely do NOT breed from your dog if it is epilepsy.
It must be worrying for you, but try not to worry too much. Both the dogs I know lead normal lives as I said
 
Our 6 yr old schnauzer x poodle has epilepsy. She tends to have a few fits over several weeks and then none for several months. they last for about 10 mnutes, sometmes she's tired for a hour, sometimes not. She has been to the vet several times but they've not put her on medcation yet. The fits do seem to be stress related, eg she had a couple after we had been on holiday, and away for the weekend. She's a sensitive little soul!!
She leads a normal life. My dad's old dog had epilepsy and lved a normal life and died eventually aged 14 or 15. She did have medcation to start with, was weaned off it and was medication and fit free for several years before going back on meds when she got much older.

our old dog Sadie (she was a labrador) used to have epilepsy- she lived a happy life for many years on tablets to help control it. She used to be terrified when she was having fit the look in her eyes - but I just used to sit on floor with her and talked to her and stroked her till she came out of it - usually diareohha (I have no idea how to spell that). We've now got a dog, Ben, who's nearly 12 and has diabetes!
