Hi!

Calling all EPSM horse owners!! Do you have an EPSM horse that is a little "backward"? If so, have you found anything that you can give to increase energy?

Currently, my horse is on 550ML Oil, along with Saracen Releve and Equilbrium Condition....Releve seems to be a high energy feed but doesn't do anything for mine.

Her weight and condition are good so I don;t need to add anything, just sparkle!!

Any low sugar/starch suggestions greatly received!

Many thanks

George

I used to give Beacon (confirmed EPSM horse) Tiger oats, worked a treat.

Do also consider that the weather will play havoc with his EPSM so try increasing the oil first.

Do you feed enough vit E and selenium- this is another problem causign lethargy in the EPSM horse

Thanks Soulful...

I did look at tiger oats but the starch content was 30% - Is that not a little high for EPSM horses? If the oil is high enough....for example, my horse weighs 550Kilos and therefore get 550g fat (Corn oil)...So, as she is getting the right amount of oil do you think that will enable her cope with the 30% starch content of the tiger oats?

the only reason I didnt put her on them was becuase I thought the stach content was too high....

I really cant increase the oil anymore......It's a real struggle as it is getting the 550 down her....She does get the right amount of Vit E and Selinium....

maybe I'll have a go with the tiger oats and just add a handfull at a time, how much tiger oats did you feed?

George

This works well for my horse who has enough energy to spend all day running up and down a steep hill trying to marshall 'her' herd.

200g (dry weight Kwik beet) soak with 1.5-2 litres warm water to form a maderia like cake crumb

Mix in any other dry ingredients

Then this will easily absorb 1/2 litre of oil without being greasy or slimy or disgusting in any way.

My 15.2 light/medium weight has

200g (dry weight) Kwik Beet
200g micronised linseed
2,000iu vit e
4 scoops NAF pink powder
2 measures stand free
2 measures mobility
1tsp cal mag
Yea Sacc 1026

Her hay is soaked for 24 hours and then washed through. This is key to keeping her energy levels up as it removes a lot of the sugar from the hay.

I would agree - 30% starch is way too much for an EPSM horse.

Some people feed starch and then buy other products to help the horse digest it. I don't find that logical or practical. I'd rather feed what my horse can eat....

On this diet she is happy and energetic. I can always tell when she has had access to other things (even an apple) because it affects her negatively and very quickly.

The linseed is 35% oil and less than 3% sugar/starch and has all the amino acids a horse will need, so its a great feed for the average EPSM horse.

My friend's horse was initially bought as a light hack (and very cheap!) as her tying up episodes were too frequent for her to be the competition horse she was bred to be.
We did loads of research, and some trial and error, and in 5 years she has only tyed up proper 3 times.
Lack of energy and stamina has been a problem as the mare now competes regularly, and hunts. We've found a diet of Allen and Page's Power and Performance (recommended amount split into 2 feeds), a mug of black sunflower seeds, vit e with selenium and chasteberry powder gives her the staying power alongside as much turnout as possible during the daylight with plenty of clean, dry 'normal' hay when stabled at night.
She still gets 'warmed up' well, no jumping straight out of the lorry into the ring to do 4 rounds of jumping, but she finally has enough oomph to stay out all day hunting and can, occasionally, stay infront of whizzy ponies on a gallop up the downs!
It's a difficult condition as what works for one horse probably doesn't work for another. According to our vet, some horse with the condition have a greater muscle damage problem than others depending on how the condition has been managed prior to diagnosis. We'd never heard of it until my friend bought her but it seems to crop up much more these days.

I guess each horse is different. I never found the starch in the tiger oats a problem I only fed one mug full per feed and I used to vary it compared to the work load.

If you try it add it slowly and see what happens.

I would however try and think of some way of increasing the oil if you possibly can or do half corn oil and half rapeseed (co-op's own make is rapeseed) as some people say rapeseed is even better for them (especially for joints)

Hi,
I use Dodson & Horrell ERS Pellets to give my dressage horse more energy at competitions and harder training times. It's are a high energy feed from digestible fibre and oil, plus it has electrolytes. His on releve but a very laid back horse that needs a real boost at competition times. Does the trick for mine and i had real problems in the past, i also use feedmark opti muscle and swear by it. It's really tricky to find the balance that works for yours. When not training and having a chill we cut back on feeds and just has diet chaff a little bit of releve and supplements. I also found with mine with my vet that puttting him on a calmer has when competing made a huge change as magnesium is necessary for electrolyte balance and is also necessary for muscle function (including function of heart muscle) and for a healthy nervous system. Mine has different supplements at certain times of the year as looking at his history it maybe a sessional problem due to grass changes thats where the magnesium comes in.

As with anything they are all different i have spent years with mine missing out on big championships due to tying up but got it right this year and managed to go away to some championships and did some heavy training up to it with not a problem... Also have a look at Nupa feed stay power this is great stuff!!

I'm not advising what to feed your horses or what's right or wrong just thought i'd share my experience as i nearly had to retire my dream competition horse at the age of 8 due to trying up. fingers crossed we have had a great year with only one hiccup..:)
