so my lad as an abscess we are on day 6 of poulticing

so i tubbed his hoof today in epsom salts... i got a shower when he flicked the bucket up! wasnt pleasant!

any how i will be tubbing again tomorrow

but a fellow livery said i should feed the epsom salts to kill the infection from the inside

is it ok to feed them??


and how much do you feed to a 16'1hh tb gelding?

any help on this? or any other ideas on to how to kick his abbess would be wonderful right now!

I would not -


O have been tubbing my boy all week and he kicked bucket over too. My vet said just tub and dry then when gone dry poultice and http://www.msd-animal-health.co.uk/products_public/engemycin_spray/010_overview.aspx
 
Nope, I wouldn't either. My big horse had the mother of all abscesses that was nearly the end of him (it wasn't though, he came back from it better than ever). Neither any of the vets nor the superb remedial farrier who helped us, ever suggested feeding Epsom salts, only tubbing with them.
 
Feeding Epsom salts is fine but is more usual in colic cases as it helps draw water through the gut. Don't know if there's any benefit to using them for tubbing. Would have thought normal salt better.
 
When my lad got an abscess, My vet recommended warm tubbing with Epsom salt rather than normal salt as it helps to draw out an abscess. I used a rubber feed skip and hot tubbed for 6 days with wet poultice for three days and dry poultice for three days. Also, my dog has had an infected cyst on his foot and our doggy vet also recommended Epsom salt tubbing for this as well for the same reason.

My horse stood in the warm water better than my dog!!! But it worked well in both cases. Never heard of feeding it though
 
Epsom Salts ,(Magnesium Sulphate ) Is a strong Purgative if fed. Dont mess about with this sort of dodgy advice from people who havnt a clue what they are talking about.

I'll pass that onto my vet who prescribed the use of them for a few days after my horse had an impaction colic
 
What a vet prescribes for colic (EG a purgative,) and what the yard know all recommends for an abscess are two entirely different things . I am sure your vet will explain.

I didn't make that clear when I said feeding them was OK in colic cases. I didn't mean they were OK to feed for abscesses. I should have been clearer it's true.
Who are you referring to as the yard know all ?
 
Thank you every one, I have been tubbing with Epsom salts apart from tonight as I ran out so grabbed the table salt, tack shop it open tomorrow so will be picking up more for tubbing, I don't like feeding things I know not enough about so I am very glad I asked! I like to keep things plain and simple for my boy as he have a delicate tummy (did have ulcers last year)
 
There is a thread in the club house about light hearted forum rules in which flouncing is mentioned a lot. So it reminded me to clarify with Mike007 before I flounced. Good job I did.
 
Definitely good for tubbing. I'm doing it as often as possible but my horse will just stand with her foot in the bucket for half an hour plus while I go and do other things. Hers burst out her heel tonight.
