Equest Pramox and Equimax....

Hi there,

A friend of mine wormed with Equest Pramox 5 days ago and has now found some bots in her horses droppings!!

She wants to now worm with Equimax but I can't remember if she has to leave it a while due to both thee wormers being quite strong?!

Also, does Equimax tackle bots?

I thought Pramox killed just about everything!! If not pretty sure equvalan does bots!

I *think* the drug Moxicdectin in the Pramox stays in the horses system and is still active for 14 days. I had a rescue pony last year which had a very heavy worm burden and I was still finding worms in the droppings for a few days after dosing with Pramox. I asked my vet if I should worm again - they advised not to as it would be too harsh on the horse, can your friend check with her vet?
 
consult with the vet or and SQP as equest pramox last 13 weeks worming time and it does prety much everything, if you worm again to soon with another strong wormer then you will do more harm then good,
 
The bots are in the droppings because they are dead! If there werent worms in the droppings the horse either didnt have any or the wormer didnt work! If there are worms then the wormer did its job and there is no need to worm again!
 
teddyt, normally i woldn't be worried as - as you say - if they're in the droppings the wormer has worked...

However, the bots she found were still alive!!

Have recommended that she calls the vet so hopefully she has... She was also muttering about getting a worm count done.

What ever she does, do NOT worm again with an almost identical wormer without first consulting her vet.
 
Doubt they'll be alive for long. If the wormer hadnt worked then they wouldnt have come out. They may have wriggled a bit but they were probably dying. If they were fit and healthy and unaffected by the wormer then they would not be in the droppings. ETA- it is too early for the larvae to emerge, they normally come out in the summer. Eggs are normally laid late summer/ autumn and larvae come out about ten months later.
 
Studies of bots actually show that they do very little harm at all to horses even in massive numbers. We have been persuaded by drug companies that we need to worm against them... By overdosing on wormers we can cause the drug resistant worms to be the only ones that survive and multiply- once all worms are resistant, we will have a big problem as there are no 'new' drugs in the pipeline.... So be very carefull about worming again with the same class of drug. But would advise as above- speak to an SQP (qualified people to sell wormers) or the vet!
 
Do NOT worm again- the fact you found the bots suggests the pramox did it's job!!! If we keep up constant overuse of chemicals we will have massive resistance problem on our hands, as sheep farmers have been aware of for many years now.
