Equest pramox yes or no?

My vet has also started saying that people can worm for encysted red worm earlier in the year. They told me this when I rang last year to ask if they were selling the rumoured tapeworm only wormer that is supposedly available from vets, but I never seem to be able to get. But Westgate are still recommending doing it between December and February, once the weather has turned and we've had a frost. So I'm curious as to why vets are now recommending this. Does anyone have any idea?

I have to say I'm a bit sceptical, and shall be waiting a bit longer. I'm doing tapeworm tests this weekend, and then my two are moving yard mid-December so I know I'll be asked to worm then. So am hoping I can use the normal Equest. I have to say that I've used Prascend in the past with absolutely no problems, but this is on two horses with known worming histories. I wouldn't be keen for a horse with an unknown worming history.

I'm like you and I'm sure others are. I have put a post in tack room asking for any vets or anyone else to let us know if it is possible to get praz. There could well be no replies! :D

Of course it was but now there's a saliva test why pay so much more for the analysis of blood?
.
Just checked cost of blood tapeworm test versus saliva one. Vet was already here to do teeth. £28 + VAT. Equisal is £20.50 at Westgate Labs. So it is more expensive but I think worth doing every now and then just as a doublecheck on the saliva one.

What would you use in December for a variety of worms, probably not tape, in 2 healthy horses with known history as have had them for years. I'm thinking equest?

advice for worm count of 50. older horse never had reaction to pramox before. Yard recommending pramox. Need to worm before they move to winter grazing. Haven't wormed since last year as spring WC was 0.

Have you done an equisal test? if not if you do one and you will see if you need to worm for tapeworm.

If you don't need to do tapeworm then equest (which is half of pramox) will do encysted as well.

I would never use pramox, just too risky for me.

thank you will do the equisal test

I use pramox in December but this is on a pony with a known history and worm counts of 0 nearly every time I test. With a new horse, I’d be more cautious. He’s also only 250kg so gets a quarter of a tube.

My mare is in foal and I'm reluctant to use Pramox even though low worm count. Vet is doing a blood test for tapeworm = £££ but at least I'll know for sure if she needs to be treated for tapeworm. If not, then the green Equest should do all the rest.

Update: tapeworm blood test for all three came back "super low" (to use vet's term) for all 3. Blood test cost £28 cos vet already here; Pramox saving is £23. However, also had to pay £9.99 for Westgate worm count as well.
