I am sure there may have been something on this already, but I really want to know what people prefer?

I have a Pessoa, and am considering an Ami (for lunging). The only one who I think would benefit from it at the moment is a 4yo dinosaur pony! Well, 16.2hh. He is just very baby-ish and looks like a giraffe on ice at the moment. Would love to get him going correctly and building up some muscle before we climb aboard.

What are peoples opinions?

I have just bought an equiami & am impressed so far. Before buying it I did borrow a pessoa & found it wasn't do much. It was my physio who recommended the equiami :)

My physio coaxed me to a equi ami to rehab a horse after surgery .I loath pessoas but have been pleasantly impressed by the equi ami which addresses many of the things that bothered me about the Pessoa.

Anyone else have any reviews/experiences with this aid. I have just ordered one waiting for it to arrive!

I have used the pessoa for years and really liked it. However, since buying the equi ami, I would never use a pessoa again as the equi ami is so much better. Horses go in it completely relaxed, the bit stays still in the mouth, and most importantly, it is self adjusting so that the horse can bend correctly around the circle. I found with the pessoa that you either have to adjust the inside shorter, or pass the lunge line through the bit to the roller to create correct bend. Neither of these options was acceptable to me, but I put up with it.

You need to use a proper lunge cavesson rather than attaching the lunge line to the bit with the equi ami though, otherwise you will interfere with its action.

I bought an EquiAmi for my horse a couple of months ago and have been really impressed with it, horse is working well on the lunge and his topline and back end are developing well. As I hadn't lunged in anything other than side-reins before I asked my instructor to give me a hand the first time I used it - just so I could make sure I was doing everything correctly. My horse is strong on the lunge and doesn't really go well in a cavesson, so I have been lunging off the bit - my instructor advised me to do this as he'd always been lunged in that way and it would give me a bit of control, as well as helping create some inside bend. He's been working well in this way and the EquiAmi is doing its job - with this considered should I still be using a cavesson? If so - any tips for lunging a strong, naughty horse in a cavesson? :)

Thanks in advance.

I bought an equi ami last week and used it for the first time today.

After 5 or so mins of bucking and charging around, my boy settled quickly and worked really well in it. It didn't seem to jab his mouth and he was still able to stretch down when he wanted to.

The other thing I liked was that it was so easy to put together.

My first impressions are really positive.

My horse didn't go well in the pessoa. I've used the equi ami twice now and he's gone really well in it so from my experience I'd go with the equi ami -much easier to put on too!

I know what you mean. However, the two really lunge strong horses I have lunged with the equi ami have been fine in the cavesson. I think you might be pleasantly surprised. Using the lunge line on the bit actually interferes with the correct action of the equiami.

what about the ridden equi ami? any thoughts?

I have this as well as I bought the EquiAmi combi. I do like it but I probably wouldn't buy it if I didn't use the lunging aid as well - it does seem like a bit of a 'tagged on' product to the lunging aid, if that makes sense. They do compliment each other well though - I tend to use the lunging aid twice a week and the riding aid once or twice a week. If I do a schooling session without the EquiAmi a few days after using it I notice a real difference, like my horse 'remembers' the correct way of going, leading to improved self-carriage. I personally think it is much more effective and sympathetic to other training aids you can use when riding, and it makes the horse really work so you only do 20 mins at a time, which makes for a quick and effective schooling session.

Wagtail - thanks for the advice, will dig out my lunge cavesson then. It doesn't appear that lunging off the bit affects the action of the EquiAmi too dramatically, but it will be interesting to see how it works when I lunge off the cavesson instead.
