Has anyone ever used these boots to prevent mud fever. What did you think of them. I'm thining of getting a pair for my mare's back legs where she seems to be prone to mud fever. My worry is that the mud may be able to work its way up the boots if she walks through deep mud. Any comments would be appreciated. thanks.

I have used Shires Mud Socks as they're called now after my boy had a bad dose of MF.
The water still gets in and so long as you put them on as tight as you can before T/O the mud doesn't get under. Of course you have to clean the mud off the boots and dry them ready for next day which is too much of a problem if your horse is being brought in by someone else.
I just plaster udder cream on his dry legs in the morning and put boots on on top.
As i said, put them on tight as you can, especially the strap just above the fetlock joint or they soften when warm and can slide down and get trodden on.

We used them once - for one day. The resultant spread of mud fever was one of the most severe our boy ever had.

I know people who do use them to try to prevent mud fever on an animal who doesn't actually have it. But I would not wrap my boy's legs again.

Water still gets in. What causes mud fever is a bacterium - not the mud itself. That can go anywhere the water goes. Then you hold the bacteria in a nice warm protective environment close to skin. Recepie for disaster - at least for us.
