I own a skewbald with white socks, and he's already had mud fever mildly once this winter. Luckily it cleared up within about 3 days, but I don't want it to happen again.
His field gets quite muddy and churned up, so I'm worried about him getting mud fever again, but I can't keep him in as he gets stressed.
I was thinking about buying a pair of close contact equi-chaps from Equilibrium. Does anyone else have a pair/ know someone who's used them? Are they worth buying?

I have them and swear by them if I am honest. My horses don't go out without them on and they really do keep their legs well protected and clean! If i leave them off for a day I really regret it. I don't have any experience of mud fever before though. Equi-chaps and close contact ones vary in how they fit and how long they should be worn. A member of MMH sent a question in almost identical to yours and here was equilibriums answer - answer from equilibrium Hope this helps!

Why dont you just slap a load of sudocrem on the affected feet? Brilliant water and mud barrier. No need for fancy footwear I dont think! My horse gets mud fever on his white sock and this is what I do. Works a treat. And cheap.

I love mine! Plus it means they have clean dry legs if you want to work them in the evening straight from the field.

I asked my vet about these as I also have a coloured who is prone to mud fever. His advice was that they are great until any damp or wet gets in underneath and then they provide the ideal breeding ground for bacteria. As we have a stream in our field he didn't recommend them at all as he felt that my horse would be getting wet underneath them. Other than that I have heard good about them from 2 people I know who use them.

I bought the close contact ones a few months ago as I was at the end of my tether with mud fever (would have tried anything). I was amazed but they do actually work to keep the mud out. My mare's field is really soggy and she has to walk through thick mud at the gateways to get in and out. A tiny bit of mud seeped in right at the bottom (about half an inch) but the rest of her leg was clean and dry. Worth a go, I'd say.
