equi-pings any good?

ive been using an elasticated safety tie similar to the equitie but it has elastic not rubber and i cant find another one anywhere so ive bought an equi-ping instead. are they any good? do they snap when horse pulls back or just come undone? the elastic equitie ive been using is fab it just comes undoen rather than snap like the rubber ones. has anyone used the equi-ties and would you recomend them?

also if anyone knows where i can get an elasticated equitie from can you share a link pretty please? xx
 
I got some elastic tie things from Eileen Douglas, but it was quite a while ago. They have a website but I don't think they put all their stock on it but you could try ringing the shop. I seem to remember they were in a plastic bag with a cardboard top by the grooming stuff in the Wokingham shop.

Personally I found the elastic thingies pretty rubbish - my horse soon worked out that they would give way without too much effort and just used to walk off. I've gone back to half thickness baler twine instead.
 
Equi pings old design wasnt brilliant I found it came undone too easily. But I volunteered to trial their new model, mkII i believe, and have been getting on with it well :).
 
Bailer twine breaks fine, how thick do people use it? We have used it in every yard, stud farm, racing yards no problem with it at all it breaks fine as long as people aren't stupid and use it to thick.
 
Thatsmygirl you have hit the nail on the head......i always seperate and make sure the twine is thin enough my sister goes over all the tie up areas to make sure it isnt too thick even if we dont tie up there as we have seen some panicy nags when the twine was too thick.

we arent allowed to use them on our yard after a nasty accident few years ago.

The marK 2 ones have a sleeve to put over opening, but really need that making so somehow doesn't ping off and get lost needs a loop to keep it attached to ping.
 
I can't see the point in paying for something when most yards are full of free baler twine, just thin it & it breaks just fine.
The other liveries on my yard use twine but don't thin it which makes me wince a bit but I always do, I have no intention of parting with any money to buy an equi-ping.

as i mentioned before we are NOT allowed to tie our horses up using it no matter how thin we have it after a nasty accident few years ago our yard owner banned it from the yard.

Sorry I didn't notice your post, in your case then they would be a good idea, I don't like seeing horses tied up with full thickness baler twine. Everybody on my yard does it but it's up to them.
Are they very expensive?
 
just read on the bailer twine thread that MarkIIs come into stock in may apparently so your is almost definitely going to be a mark I I would have thought :(. You could try emailing the company to ask for the sleeve which goes over if you find they come undone too easily :).
 
OK so using baler twine can be dangerous unless you thin it down first and these other safety ties can be expensive and break to easily. Has any one tried using wrapping string??
I would think that it might hold longer than the rubber ties and yet break quicker than baler twine. Just an idea, I haven't tried it myself yet might give it a go and see. Just trying to think of alternatives that don't cost the earth, as sometimes the simplest of ideas are the best.
 
I bought some velcro safety tie thing from ebay which I keep in my coat pocket for tying up out and about. Its great although I use it about half way up the velcro so it's comes apart easily. If anyone wants the link let me know and will try and dig it out :-)

id be interested :)

i dont really like the rubber ties and thats why i dont want the rubber equi tie but cant find the elastic ones anywhere and they are amazing they hardly break ive had 3 (2 ''went missing'' when a girl left our yard) and it only broke last week (ive had them a good couple of years and horse is a regular panicker) they usually strecth then pull open but this time it snapped maybe from being left out over winter :'(
 
I use equi-pings! For us they are great my horse used to know that he could break bailer twine not in a panic situation just - I don't want to be here anymore so an long hard pressure building pull so much so that when the bloody twine (frayed so it would go in a panic).

I spoke to the woman at Badminton last year and she explained it to me so bought one to start with and its perfect when he does panic it 'pings' but doesn't give when he was doing his stubborn thing- he only tried once after and pulled so hard his rope broke and he did a backwards roll - i think he learnt his lesson as not done again.

I now have a set as they look so much smarter hanging off the trailer and are so much easier to swap around to different positions.

After an accient on saturday where my horse was tied to bailer twine i swear i will never tie another horse to the stuff again. It does seem to be getting stronger these days, and i'm not silly enough to use it at full thickness either. I seperated it out to 4 thin strands and my mare panicked, twine didnt break so she then managed to pull the wooden beam the tie ring was attached to off the wall and down onto her. She then obviously panicked more and came galloping towards me an the farrier with a 9ft thick wooden beam bouncing around beside her- the twine still wasnt broken! It didnt break until about 20 ft after the starting point. I was absoultely horrified- Lola thankfully was absolutley fine and only has 2 very tiny scratches to show for it but it could have been so much worse. It still makes me feel ill thinking about it 2 days later :( After 16 years of tying horses to bailer twine i've never has anything like that happen before. I've been out and brought an equi ping which cost me £6 and i dont care if it snaps under light pressure, i'd much rather that that see anything like saturdays events happen again. She doesnt tend to go anywhere when she gets free anyway, she regularly unties herself and just stands there. I think she quite likes the challenge! :rolleyes: I'm hoping the equi ping puts up just enough of a fight to stop her dancing when she's in one of those moods but breaks very easily if she panics again.
 
Ooh, and the Robinsons in Cannock have the quick clips in stock if thats any good to you? I brought 2 yesterday to try if the equi ping is no good :)
