Hi All
My horse has had a really sore back caused from arthritic hock and a badly fitted saddle. Hock is now medicated couple months ago and the saddle now sold - so as he has a weak back and hanging belly the plan is to keep up inhand work overpoles etc and lunge twice a week in the equiami to get him using his back and hind end more and belly lifts to help tone his abs.
Just wondering if anyone has used the Equiami for back muscle rehab and how long until you seen the results and what your routine was?

Not neven considering riding until the spring so got plently of time to build him up nicely hopefully.

It would be nice to hear your stories :-)

Hhhmmm sorry this doesnt sit right with me. Personally I wouldnt be lunging him at all, let alone lunging him in an equiami (I have one, I love it)

why? the hock is fine and vet give go ahead, he has had physio and his back isn't sore anymore so the lunging it to get him toned up and using himself properly??

Lunging is a good exercise, over raised poles or cavalletti even better for lifting the back. I'm not a fan of the "trussed chicken" type devices, but something like a bungee/deGogue might work, or even relaxed sidereins. I had a horse with severe muscle wastage over his back (from bad riding and a badly fitting saddle), who greatly benefitted from pole work, both on the lunge and under saddle. Good luck!

Lunging is sufficient exercise for an unfit horse without any kit. You need to introduce it gradually to allow the horse's muscles to build up and not make him sore. Start with walk and trot for only a few minutes, build up the time, use transitions and allow your horse to find its balance without side reins or bungees before introducing poles and then cavaletti.
The Spanish riding school lunge their young horses for three months before attempting to back them so you're in good company. :)

I start lunging an unfit horse in rehab by walking them them round the perimeter track of my 40m x 20m school. The horse wears a headcollar or Micklem, but no other devices. I reckon to do 20 minutes initially, changing the rein every 5 minutes. I gradually bring in a circuit or two of trot, and the occasional 20m circle and then poles, starting with single poles here and there. I find it very interesting, and it get me fit too!

I'm a fan of the Equiami, and I'd introduce it after at least 4 to 6 weeks of prior gadgetless lunging, if I thought the horse would benefit.

Good luck.

Thanks - he has had months of inhand work etc so he is ready for the Equiami - obviously warm up first before using it - just wondered if anyone had any sucess stories and how long it took to see results etc etc xx

Lunge walking is the way to start were you keep the horse a good distance away from you but lunge it all round the school ( very good for getting you fit as well ) .
You can use all sorts of pole exercises.
I have an equi ami which I did try on my horse who had a KS op it very defiantly did not help in fact it set him back we went back to using nothing with the occasional use of a very loose bungee .

Would rather long rein, lunge with two reins (with outside rein over back) or just plain lunging, incorporating trotting poles and raised trotting poles.

I want them to be able to come into a shape because they are ready for it muscle wise. I've had great results with my last TB with a lunge line, a headcollar, and plain old trotting poles!
