equichaps turnout boots - any good?

My boy is moving to 24/7 turnout in March and am looking at ways to help make things easier on days we are competing- will be investing in a stretchy hood to keep face and top of neck clean as possible and protect any plaiting i have done, and looking forways to keep lower legs clean and dry the night before show and by just looking at photos these seem the best and wondered if anyone had any experience with these?

Had mine about 3 years. Always wash well and keep my mares legs nice and dry and mud free! Worth the price. I did find they come up quite big though and had to change mine to smaller ones when i first bought them.

A total waste of money for mud-fever prevention (rubbed and let mud in). I use a barrier cream which is much better. However as you want them to only use before a show to keep legs clean they might be OK if you horse's leg conformation suits them. Could you borrow some to try on before you buy?
 
Must agree that they're not as good as I'd hoped.

They need to be kept clean and dry (on the inside against the horse's skin at the very least), else they just exacerbate the problem of irritated skin. Applying them clean and dry every morning can be more time consuming and troublesome than simply slapping on a barrier lotion.

Also, in wet conditions - when mud's sloppy or deep - the boots dont prevent mud getting in underneath them. This is worse than not having the boots on, as the wet and mud works its way in underneath, wearing the boots warms the leg underneath and the undersirable bacteria has the potential to multiply even better under the warmth of the leg protection. I have several pairs but gave up using them a couple of years ago. Too much hassle.

I'm now just apply Pig Oil as a water and mud repellent to their lower legs. The wet and mud just slide off.
 
I had some a few years ago for a horse following injury...thought it would offer extra protection....they rubbed like hell. Plus as others have said mud seeps up underneath.

I just use pig oil now......or if you are wanting to keep clean just get some bog-standard turn-out boots/socks - much better.
 
Thank you for your replys- he doesn't suffer with mud fever and they would only be on 1 night only before a show and lucky the field is very well drain so no 'sloshy' mud, just trying to make show days easier.

I'll see if anyone has some I could try
 
I use the Derby House ones - cheaper - and were half price in the sale! They have never rubbed my horses - and I use them on 3 different horses. We do suffer from mud rash and boggy fields, and these helped a lot. Very very little mud got underneath. We have two pairs per horse - so one pair can be hosed off and dry while the other is in use. That said, ours only go out in the muddy field with them on a couple of times a week for a change to the stable and the small hardcore turnout paddock...

I would think that they would be great for keeping legs clean in summer, but may cause sweating and therefore irritation, so I'd try them out first before a show...
 
They're amazing! Worth their weight in gold as far as I'm concerned. My boy gets horrendous mud fever, but with his boots we have no problems at all, he comes in every night with lovely, clean, dry legs and is as happy as Larry!
