I have recently been thinking about using a calmer for my very tricky mare, therefore I have been trawling through forums etc to see what other people are finding effective in similar situations.

My investigations have lead me to seek advice from both Equifeast and Hack Up Bespoke.

I called Equifeast today and received extensive advice, which was great! however, when I explained what I was currently feeding they advised me not to use that brand due to the levels of magnesium in it (I wont specify the brand as I don't think it is fair) but all of the products I use are non-heating so I wasn't advised against them on the basis of them containing too much energy.

My question is...... has anyone else spoken to Equifeast and been advised to stop using the products they were on? and, has that advice worked?

In fairness to Equifeast they didn't even try and sell me a calmer, they said to see how we go with less magnesium in the diet

Yes, they advised me to change his diet. I tried EquiFeast on my older lad and it helped. Tried it on a new one and it didn't work, I asked for a refund after being advised that if it didn't work I could get my money back, but they wouldn't refund so I have been loathed to try it again.

Not quite answering your question but my horse went very footsore on equifeast (he has NEVER been footsore til a few weeks after feeding it and was on no grass) he also suffered a big muscle fasiculation episode when I withdrew the product having accidentally fed it for 2 weeks without a break, his whole body was wobbling like a jelly. He also didn't find it palatable. So I wouldn't use it again and went back into the feed I was on before. My horse is now behaving the best he ever has, because I tackled the other things stressing him (saddle fit, switched it bitless, plus treating pain), even though he is on exactly the same diet as when he was at his worst.

That said, I really appreciated the time and effort Equifeast put into responding to all my questions, they were very thorough. So no complaints about their service, the product just didn't suit us and obviously wasn't what my horse needed to chill him out.

they have advised that I don't try a calmer yet, they said that the diet change alone could be enough. did the diet changes that they recommended to you make a significant difference?

It seems to work for some
a lot of their info and 'data' is not really very up to date as science goes.
They have a product they have an exclusive licence for and are keen to therefore sell as much as that thing as possible.
They have several ASA charges against their advertsing.
They were appalling after the death of an event rider suggesting that the use of magnesium calmers was the cause.
I have been mostly unconvinced by their advice and the science behind it and wouldn't use their products although some do still seem to find they work.

I would probably be more sceptical if they had tried to push their own products, but they didn't. they told me not to buy any of their calmers, but instead to change the diet and reassess in a months time as to whether or not I still needed a calmer. They helped me to find alternative products on the market that would be suitable for my horses needs, but much lower in magnesium.

I remember something about a company making those statements following the death of an event rider, but I didn't realise it was them that said it.

I used Equifeast Cool, Calm and Collected. The horse became significantly more agitated whilst he was on it, which the good folk of Equifeast said was a good thing.

I abandoned the trial, and the horse settled down. This was about 4 years ago.

More agitated a good thing?! hmmm, not exactly what I would expect!

oh gosh!! that's doesn't sound too good!!! my mare doesn't hve any pan issues, shes been checked by various professionals, she is just a cow bag!!! LOL

Oh I don't think they are ever particularly pushy/hard sell and I do think they believe in what they are selling but neither the product or some of the stuff around it floats my boat :).
