I have recently been thinking about using a calmer for my very tricky mare, therefore I have been trawling through forums etc to see what other people are finding effective in similar situations.

My investigations have lead me to seek advice from both Equifeast and Hack Up Bespoke.

I called Equifeast today and received extensive advice, which was great! however, when I explained what I was currently feeding they advised me not to use that brand due to the levels of magnesium in it (I wont specify the brand as I don't think it is fair) but all of the products I use are non-heating so I wasn't advised against them on the basis of them containing too much energy.

My question is...... has anyone else spoken to Equifeast and been advised to stop using the products they were on? and, has that advice worked?

In fairness to Equifeast they didn't even try and sell me a calmer, they said to see how we go with less magnesium in the diet

I used equifeast and went through the loading period etc etc and it had no effect on my horse

I was advised no to feed the added magnesium they send as my horse was having enough and too much can make them spooky.

I purchased another months supply but still had no effect.

I then was recommended Stepfree form Hack up as it had worked on a friends stallion, and can honestly say my only wish is that I found it sooner as my horse is now retired. I tried MANY calmers on the market most magnesium based some weren't, valerian had an effect but nothing like the stepfree gave a chat to Alex at hack up you've got nothing to lose completing the horse profile and see what is advised.

They are literally the only company that claims calcium does anything but contract muscles. That is contrary to every piece of biochemical literature I have ever read (and hello, I am a biochemical engineer)... on that reason alone I call bull on anything their "experts" claim. There was a big kerfluffle about them name-dropping a big name eventer (Lucinda Green) who had never endorsed their product nor claimed magnesium contributes to deaths on cross country. Just too much drama for anything I'd ever consider feeding my horse.
