It only has 2 belly straps instead of 3, apart from that and the colour, it looks identical...( I only have the old one though)

It's just the straps that are different. The newer one uses a different battery too. But they are identical in the way they work.

As above. I actually prefer the old style with three straps... (I have both).
You can use the new style battery in the old black pads as long as you update the charger as well. The grey pads have been out for a while, though, so a black pad will be older.
