Hi All,

I noticed in my horses passport that he had two innoculations of the above a month apart in 2005, i have googled and it appears to be a vaccination for Strangles, he would have been 2 at the time he was given the injections.

Does the fact he had these injections mean he had it or that he was given them as a preventative measure?

Thanks

My horse had these a few years ago they were at six monthly intervals if I remember correctly.
It was given in a scratch of the nasal mucous membrane .

It was heavily pushed by the Vet Pharma companies and especially by the BHS .

An English producer of ponies claimed that it gave their pony a full blown case of strangles and started an action, haven't heard a dicky bird about it since.
A bit poor of the BHS to allow themselves be used by the Drug companies like that I think.

Sorry memory very defective indeed .
Just checked Passport and on
10-10-2005 strep-equi i/nasal and also
11-11-2005 strep-equi i/nasal

Nothing after that . I think they withdrew it , will do a search and see what I can find.
My horse had these because we regularly visited a livery yard where all the horses had been innoculated he had never had Strangles or been anywhere near a yard with Strangles but there was a lot of hype about it at the time.

The vaccine was withdrawn and ha now been re-introduced, it might have been given if horse was competing

Thats very interesting , thank you .
Do you know if they gave any reassurances that it would be safe now ?

There doesn't seem to be the same pressure from the pharma companies to restart innoculations.

It was safe but became too attenuated to be effective, the new one is obviously better. Check around with local vets, the firm Schering-Plough are touring the country explaining uses and recommendations, basically you are at risk if you compete, if you are in a large yard with a moving population, buying horses from dealers, etc, it is recommended that all horses in the yard are vaccinated.........
