Do you use it? How old is your horse? I was talking to my physio the other day (horses physio as she is injured and having work done to her every week or so) and she said that she believed every ridden horse should be on a glucosamine type supplement, no matter what age (mine is 4 yrs) because of the unatural stress ridden work causes to joints. Now to be honest I wouldn't be considering any supplements like glucosamine and cod liver oil until she was a much older girlie, so I'm interested to know if any body else does this?

I use the equine america glucosamine and mine is 6yrs old, just use it as maintenance. Ive just heard of so many young horses with joint issues that i decided to use it.

On the advice of someone on here I contacted riaflex in regards to my 3 year old who I plan to SJ -not broken yet but will be soon but tunred away over winter and then introduced want to do hunters nxt year and then sj following -all going to plan. As above ie unatural stress ria flex lady advised a joint sup.

I lost my SJ mare last year 16 year old to DJS and fisher tear of tendon in the nav bursary it was cruel cruel way to go -some days she would be sound some days crippled despite doing everyhting differnt shoes shoes, supps, bute, natural remedies -turnout routines /pens etc she was pts a year ago this week on the advice of the vet and because I couldnt bear to see my horse of a life time suffer anymore.

So I want to do as much as I can to safe guard this guy so I will start a joint supp-prob ria flex and ensure trims and shoeing etc is well amanged as I truly believe this plays a massive role as well.

I used the straight Glucosamine from EA until I got told that I was wasting my money just feeding the straight glucosamine so I now feed NAF superflex but my girl is 11 and has been diagnosed with spavin.

I feed Cortaflex to my 8 yr old TB, although he never raced I just use it as preventative maintnence as I see it. He always had super clicky fetlock and hock joints when he first came out the stable but that has lessened since he started cortaflex at the beginning of the year.

I use the cheapie glucosamine from EA, not sure if I'm wasting money really, but my boy doesn't have problems, is only 9 so its just a preventative. My last mare had arthritic changes by age 10 so would agree that if you school regularly and compete, then you are putting joints under stress.

Started my 26 year old on Equine America Glucosamine in December after he stiffened up over winter. Didnt seem to have much of an effect so moved onto Cortaflex HA, which I think has helped.

I started feeding my horse this as soon as I got him aged 9.

I would like a youngster (and considered this question myself) and I think I would start feeding it after he/she was backed to be on the safe side. Its not worth the risk. If you wait until the horse starts getting stiff, he/she already has the start of arthritis.

My horse has bone spavin and sidebone and a split tendon and having gone through all of this, I would not take any chances with him or another horse.

Prevention is better than cure so they say

I have just had a similar chat with my vet. He recomeneded anything with a high level of chondroitin(sp) and hydrolonic acid to have any effect.
we have started my boy with spavins and our big arthritic ned on EA cortaflex.
