Equine Blood Bank/Donor

There is one attached to Frames vets at Penrith in Cumbria - they use Clydesdales which I must say look to be beautifully kept.

What info are you looking for??

My friends horse has just been retired at the age of 9, big fit and strong and atm pts is not the option. She is thinking of ways to justify keeping him as a field ornament.

the usual, modern diagnosis techniques showed up a lot more than theyused to! Ringbone, navicular, coffin bone changes and tears in the sesamoid ligaments..

I swear the more the scan the worse the outcome..we are better off blind sometimes. Dread to think whats going on inside most horses legs..

I have retired 2 horses to a blood bank in Bucks. One was a 6 year old I'd had since it was 2 and was diagnosed as a mild wobbler. It broke my heart but similarly could not afford to keep him as a pet. They live in large herds, out in summer and barned in winter. They give blood about every 6 weeks in exchange for board and lodgings. Not a bad life but you need a non-anthropomorphic approach to come to terms with it. Go and visit though. Apparently the standard of care varies from place to place. The one in Bucks is A1 IMO and has a very knowledgable and caring farm manager in charge.

The RVC in Hertfordshire used to keep blood donor horses. It was 3 years ago when we visited but I am sure they still do. It seemed like they had a pretty good life.
