I'm afraid I think I may have to make a difficult decision with one of my horses soon. Due to health reasons he isn't really going to more than a hack, which would be great except he isn't very good to hack  :(

I am seriously considering sending him to a blood bank as he is fantastic with vets, needles and the like and extremely easy to handle on the ground.

Does anyone have any contact details for blood banks in the UK? I am now based just outside Newmarket.

Thanks in advance.

The lady who has epona stars Facebook page has details I think. I know they take horses over 16hh until they are 15, I've considered it for one of mine but I'm going to give her a year or so yet to see if we can sort her out for riding. All the best with your decision x

Thank you!

Well, he fits the criteria. It is just such a difficult time/decision. My heart says PTS but he isn't that old and so it doesn't sit right with me. I don't agree with selling/loaning as a companion so thought a blood bank might be a better choice but trying to get contact details is a nightmare!

I think they are PTS at 15, which seems rather young.

A friend of mine sent her horse to the blood bank due to soundness issues forcing an early retirement and we were chatting about this, I don't think this is the case though. She sent another horse there years ago and he is still there and over 15 now, she was able to visit him in the herd. It may vary depending on which blood bank you send your horse to though.

I think it's a good idea if your horse will live out and is fine with being handled by different people and having injections. Apparently the horses live out and have to come in every fortnight to give blood, which sounds like quite a nice life really. The only problem I have is that you have to sign your horse to the blood bank so if anything goes wrong, or even if they don't like needles and make their job difficult, they will just put them to sleep without telling you.

My friend sent her horse to one in Oxfordshire so not a million miles away from Newmarket, I'm afraid I don't have contact details though.

If you still need one I can get you details.
what I will say is I know of one horse that went to one - would have been Maytime 2007He was/is 16:3 and could live out. I believe that was the stipulation.
Know both he and the owner considered it the best result all round.

Apologies to resurrect this thread and hijack it but does anyone know which would be the closest blood bank to the west country?
