Had a McTimoney Chiropractor come out to my horse two weeks ago which did actually help a bit, she came out again today and after seeing him said he was a bit better but she would need to come out another 4 times.

Somebody told me that a good chiropractor shouldn't need to be out to see a horse more than twice for an issue.

So what is correct? Should a chiropractor not need to come out more than twice?

It depends on how severe the treatment is i guess, but it does seem strange that they need to come out that many times for one problem, you would think they could fix it in one or mabye 2 treatments! Ours only has to come out once if my horses back has gone (and everyone else i know i am pretty sure only needs him out once), but he is amazing and shows us exactly what he does in order to tell if our horses back has gone again, then we just call him out when the horse needs it (all of ours are jumped a lot so we keep a close eye on their backs). Normally the time can go from 3 months to 10 months before i even have to call. Hope that helps

Sounds a bit odd that she said she needs to come out another four times! I had a McTimmoney chiropracter out to my mare after she twisted her pelvis and she gave her 3 treatments over 4ish weeks. I had her out for a checkup and all was fine so just the once that time.

Did she explain exactly what is wrong with your horse to need that many treatments? I'd be tempted to get a second opinion also.

Switch to a physio instead. I don't buy all of the pseudo science behind chiropractors. I had one out last year who told me my horse had lovely even muscle development - he had terribly uneven muscles due to hock spavins and compensating!

Try a physio as you'll find they will want to come out once, max twice, before they tell you to gvet the vet instead. If your horse needs that many sessions, get the vet! Chances are a sore back is indicative of leg or foot probs anyway.

I have a McTimoney Chiropractor, she came out once last summer, with a check-up one month after, and she recommended 6 monthly to yearly check-up's after that, depending how much work your horse is doing.

I would seriously look for a second opinion. If you don't mind me asking, what is the problem she is solving? My horse was in a pretty bad way last year, and it was solved in 2 sessions, and there was a huge difference even after the first.

I had our McTimoney lady out to my lad. Last saw her in 2007/8. She gave him the once over did her exercices etc, showed me where to do the massages to help him. She said she'd like to see him in 6 months.

Sounds like you should get a second opin though. It can't hurt. Good luck.

We have already had 3 physios and a vet( not one i like or trust though) out and they all reached different conclusions and although 2 of the physio's seemed to help him initially he has declined till he was the same as he had been. The vet thought that it was arthritis in his hocks (chiro and physio confirmed this was not the case). One of the physio's thought there is something wrong just before his pelvis, another that he had strained (?) his pelvis and the other thought he was in brilliant condition and that he was the best they had seen in a long time(??).

He is not lame at the moment but he is very very reluctant to work and he resists the outline and goes round with his head in the air and ears pinned back. In himself he is also unhappy and is detached as well as skinny and having no muscle.

Ok, in this case I would probably stick to the McTimoney person, for at least the next session, and wait to see how much he has improved. If everyone else seems to have failed to improve him, you may as well stick with the one that has worked : ) Or you could go on to the McTimoney website and see if there is anyone else close to your area who could come out for a second opinion as it seems that the norm is for them to come out twice or so. Good luck : )
