So I have a friend's gelding with my mare, which seemed like a neat solution now that I have land- she gets a companion and I don't have to pay for upkeep on it. But he's already injured my horse once kicking her, and is just a young rambunctious animal. My mare likes to be near other horses but is a bit introverted, insecure and not very playful. So their personalities are just not compatible and trying to manage them is getting a little old, I'm always either erecting or adjusting temporary fencing, having to bucket water out for filling buckets because i can't water both horses within reach of the hose, etc.

I'm looking for a foster/loan type situation (selfishly so I can send it home when I buy another competition horse of my own) and have been offered a weanling colt. I have a gut feel this is going to be more of a pain than it's worth. The main motivation for having another horse is so my mare stays low stress and gets good REM sleep (it's common that horses kept alone will forego sleep). Has anyone had experience with having a foal as a companion with a grown horse? Did your horse see it as an equal and sleep/act normally or was it a disaster? I feel like I should keep looking.

Two things that strike me are that a- it may well be a weanling now, but if uncut, you are risking an unwanted pregnancy if it stays for long. It's not unheard of for surprisingly young colts to cover mares successfully. A foal will also be more insecure than an older horse, and you may have issues taking your mare out to exercise/compete her.
It will also be just as likely to bite, kick and otherwise harass her as the youngster you want to get rid of!

Yea I had that feeling, was asking to confirm. Best keep looking. Thank you!!
