ok my welshie has just turned 4 he was bought as a project by me in february, i have finally managed to start bitting him, BUT there is an awful lot of tooth grinding on metal noises going on, i am Presuming he has wolf teeth come through,BUT he is completely backwards about letting me look in his mouth, yesterdays attempts left me with a good few bruises and him dancing round on his back legs.

so a vet will have to come out and sedate him then check his teeth/ or is it best to get him sedated then have an ED look at him?

oh the joys of horses.

Either will be fine. I alwasy used to use the vet but in the last couple of years have used an equine dentist. He is very good and gives me a written report after each visit.

A woman at my yard gets vet t sedate horse and then the EDT comes out, i have had both do my horses teeth and to be honest ill never let vet do it unless EDT not available.

edt every time - mine has managed to do a horse that has needed sedating with vets every time ithout anything. if you find a good edt they are worth their weight in gold

An EDT can't sedate, so you'll need a vet to do that. If you're not sure how he'll react, might be best to get an EDT this time, then you can always use a vet next time.

For the first check especially as you know he's a bit ditsy about his mouth sedating would be safer all round. Your pony will not stress about having the gag on and you know the dentist will be safe.

In the meantime use molasses on your finger and play with his lips and mouth so that he gets to accept his mouth being handled.

Some vets are fine at doing tooth, others are not. I would check on your vets dental experience. You will need him/her to sedate anyhow.
