Hi all

Just wondered if anyone else had experience of this...

Recently we (our yard) booked out a fully qualified local equine dentist. However it was one of the trainees/apprentices that arrived and treated the horses. Having looked up the name of the person, there is no mention of them taking the BEVA dentistry exam. Therefore are dentists allowed to use mechanised instruments such as the le Clair tool to rasp? (which they did...)

Just think it's a bit off that these people advertise them as the top qualified people but in reality we the owners get more of a raw deal.

Your thoughts please!!

I think it's all a bit of a mess as there are three qualifying bodies for equine dentists and they may all have different rules regarding who can do what and whether apprentices should be supervised, but none of their exams are recognised by law. I share your frustration and I would also not want to see an apprentice carrying out procedures unsupervised, but as it stands legally there is no difference between a qualified EDT and an apprentice as long as they only carry out the procedures that lay people are allowed to carry out.

A list of these procedures can be found here, lay people may use power tools.
