Hi

Does anyone know of any equine/farm animal vets in Hampshire/Berkshire? I live between Reading and Basingstoke so anywhere around there really. I'm a student at the moment, hoping to apply to a veterinary course next september, but I'm finding it impossible to get work experience with an equine vet, or the even more elusive farm animal vet! Does anyone know any practices that might be worth a try? I've tried all the ones I know of so I'm running out of ideas!

Thanks

You could try Liphook equine hospital - although I suspect they get a lot of enquiries. Or give Sparsholt College a call and see if you can work with one of thier resident vets.

O'gormans, coach house, mcgonell and gillet all take vet students (they are all newbury based euine vets), it is always harder as a work experience person as vet students take priority. the nearest farm vets i can think of are endells in salisbury. Being a vet student myself, I ended up going to cornwall for 5 weeks in the summer to do farm ems as you see a far higher case turnover down there (far more animals and less arable farmers!). Do you have any relatives in more animal-based farming areas of the uk (i.e. not hampshire). there are cedar farm vets in ringwood hants but thats a trek for you.

Valley Veterinary Group? They're quite a small practice, based in Bradfield, with surgeries at Spencers Wood and Pangbourne. I think they take students sometimes, as I'm sure I've met one when I had the vet out to my horse. They do farm/equine/small animal. Could be worth a call at least.

Liphook probably do have a huge waiting list and they also tend not to let work experience students see very much of the veterinary work. When I did an externship there the work experience students were mostly helping out with yard work. Go to www.rcvs.org.uk and go on the Find A Vet tab. You can type in your post code and it will list all the vets around you and their contact details and what species they deal with. I'd phone any/all of them and ask, they can only say no!
