Just got a text from my vet saying that there is equine flu in Cheshire and suggesting everyone checks their vaccinations are up to date.

all my horses are done and up to date but worried they still
Could be at risk ?? X

I don't think the vaccine is 100% effective but will certainly massively reduce the chances of your horses getting it and even if they do greatly reduce the severity. Stats say pretty much 100% of non vaccinated horses do get it if exposed so your chances are much better vaccinated than not.

My girl is up to date and vaccinated by the vets I got the text from.
Suppose it's easier to send to everyone rather than the ones not vaccinated.

Do you think we all have the same vet? :p
My horse is actually in Derbyshire, but only just! There is a bridleway that goes past her field so it's good to know, although she's up to date on her jabs. I think her fieldmates are too but I will double check.

Vaccination isn't 100% - my old pony caught it in the late 80s despite being vaccinated, there was a small group that had it and all survived ok, my pony was 4/5 at the time and he went on to live til 27.

P.s. I'm in Cheshire and haven't been texted - I feel left out! ;)

New horse is being done in a few weeks, booked in with the vets. Can't wait for her injection to start as her previous owner let them run out.

If you are in or near Cheshire and any horses come and go off your yard you might consider finding a vet who can do it sooner. Today would be good. It doesn't often kill but it leaves a lot with useless lungs for the rest of their lives.

Does anyone know whereabouts in Cheshire there have been cases? Which vet has notified clients. None of the horses on our small yard have been immunised for equine flu but all done for tetanus. On the basis no one goes anywhere but better to be safe than sorry?

Thank god championships has been or I might not have gone. Pretty sure you had be be vaccinated to be allowed on site at kelsall though.
