A yard close to mine has a couple of horses diagnosed with equine flu and possibly strangles. Horses are still being hacked out from the yard. Can anyone tell me if equine flu is a notifiable condition? I know that strangles isn't. The yard owner is admitting nothing but other liveries have informed other people and told them to 'keep it to themselves'😩

If they had equine flu they would be far too sick to be out hacking. A lot of yards keep quiet that they have strangles that they keep quiet. A riding school/ livery yard local to me has had it for 3mths but has continued as normal all the way through. Horses left and went to new yards which then got infected. Neither equine flu or strangles are notifiable diseases.

Thank you both for your replies. It's not the horses who have flu who are being hacked out, it's other horses. The yard is also a riding school, this has been going on for weeks and they only just cancelled lessons yesterday. Horses from the yard have also been out at various shows in that time too.

Equine flu is more contagious than strangles. They dont have to touch to catch it, a horse can cough into the air and the wind can spread it where as with strangles the horse has to come into contact with the bacteria in snot to be able to catch it. If the healthy horses have been completely isolated from the sick ones for a month and have shown no signs ( a raise in temperature is the first indicator something is amiss- which is why it should be taken daily ) then its unlikely they will get it.
