Equine gingivitis

Vet came out for vacs today and said the pony has got it. Luckily he said its very mild and I can treat it by brushing her teeth with normal toothpaste once a day for a few days. Unfortunately YO had to hold her etc as I couldnt get out of work and she didn't ask any questions like how did she get it?

If anyone has experience of this would love to hear it Luckily pony LOVED having her teeth brushed

Gingivitis wont be helped by using toothpaste. The reason why horses get gingivitis is because they get bits of grass/hay stuck between their teeth that begins to rot and cause gingival irritation. Where there is gingivitis, the gum will bleed when you pull it out. So all you really need to do is pull the feed out of the gaps with your fingers/nails (not effective with a brush and toothpaste). Then get a syringe and squirt the gaps with salty water.

My pony went to a very good equine dentist last week & I was told to do the same as you for her gingivitis. He said get a pack of cheap toothbrushes as they will break in time & also some cheap minty toothpaste which she'll love. So far i haven't got her her own tube, so she's only had the brush, but off to the supermarket tomorrow. He said to do it every day too.

Thanks V - will ring the vet tomorrow and double check what he said as nothing was written down, I was relying on YO to relay the information. The brush got most of the bits out between the teeth (very hard brushing a pony's teeth when shes frantically licking the toothpaste lol).

legaldancer - thanks for the info If yours is anything like mine then dont get too close to her mouth, I got toothpaste licked up my face...

we have an older horse whose gums werent quite at they should be. daily we syring mouth out with salt water, then liberally spary with corsydyl (mouth wash specially for gingivitisetc human) after a couple of weeks of this the gums are looking much healthier, now we do it every other day. he loves having the spray on his gums and also smells minty fresh!

Shall look out for the mouth wash too. Salt water sounds like a good idea also. Perhaps the toothpaste makes life easier for the brushing. Will look out for the splatter though!
