equine head shaking syndrome???

hello ,
My horse suffers from equine head shaking syndrome because of the allergy to the pollen at this time of the year. It is nothing but a pain, as it makes my horse un rideable at times and makes the horse distressed (running around and hiding her nose in bushes and under other horses tails). Currently she is having piriton tablets daily and is wearing a fly mask with a nose veil on, and also a nose net when ridden and possibly a fly mask (which limits what i can do when ridden). I had big ambitions for this horse during the summer time and it has really upset me that i can't go through with them. Is there anything else out there such as remedies/ old wives tales that work for any of your horses? I am willing to try anything.

Sorry as haven't got time to go into a long reply right now but you can get a riding mask with excellent visibility. My daughter's pony has one as he is very sensitive to light and together they do all pc stuff, xc, sj, flatwork etc.

Otherwise do searches on here for phrases like pollen allergy, antihistamines, headshaking, nostrilvet, trigeminal nerve, cavalesse, and it will bring up loads of info from users which may be of help.

I am treating our pony with acupuncture at the moment and it has stopped him 100% (not a cure, needs repeat treatments over several weeks) but we do know that his problem is his trigeminal nerve primarily and pollen etc further to that.

You can apply to BD for dispensation to compete with horse in a full riding net. If you look at the next page or 2 you should find my thread on this, with more details.

How much does the accupuncture cost?
Im thinking of trying this I am not sure what she could be suffering from as there is 3 main things that are in mind .. pollen, flies and sunlight as she is worse on warm sunny days. But along with sunny days comes the sunlight, flies and higher pollen rate.

My horse is the same, worst at this time of year with the oil seed rape and tree blossom. I try to ride only early morning or evenings when the pollen count is low and she wears a nose net which helps. I have also ditched her flash strap as it seemed to restrict her breathing. Avoiding fields of rape if possible is also good for mine as she goes daft just walking alongside one. I use herbal tablets from our chemist which help but nothing seems to cure it. I find she copes much better with all this and going to shows etc is not as bad for us as they are almost always in large open arenas or fields and not too close to anything pollen related. Hope you find a solution that helps with yours too.

You need your vet to do it - they need to have qualified in acupuncture - and it will be the cost of the call out plus treatment (I think it was about £70 for the first one) and of course sedation on top of that if needed.

Ours started with 3 visits about a week, then 2 and 3 weeks apart, then the visits become less frequent as time goes on and you work out your horse's need for a top up treatment. As it turned out mine has gone from the first visit without head shaking so after the initial 3 we've had a visit at 5, 6 and then 8 week intervals.

Its best to start before the season starts for whatever triggers your horse's symptoms so you can get ahead of it and build up a resistance if that's the right word.

We started late as didn't know about it until after the days had become brighter and pollen levels higher but I think we could have started around May and then just had a couple of visits to get through until Autumn.

As it happens the pony is now for sale and I hope that if a potential buyer can't be bothered with the full face mask they could carry on treatments next summer and be rid of the issue. I had been very anxious about finding him a home before the acupuncture but now I hold out more hope. Personally I think wearing a mask when needed or paying for the treatment is a small price to pay for a super safe genuine child's allrounder pc / hunting pony, but of course some people just want perfect!
 
I am very amused to see you on yet another thread making this claim. I do wonder what your motives are, and would be interested to see any evidence of a "cure" .

If it so impressive, please contact a veterinary college, or agricultural college, where at least basic testing can take place. There are a number of products on the market being retailed under this premise.

Those of us with head shakers have usually explored the options and would love a cure. BUT, you are marketing a product on this forum with all the credibility of snake oil.

I find it astonishing that you even need a vet! How's your research into grass sickness coming along?:D:D. I thought at first you were troll, now however I think you are just very misguided. And possibly a bit dangerous:mad:

Actually my guy does have the day off. But then he has been worked (face net and nose net)
everyday for the last week, as he does most weeks, including a session with a former Olympic dressage judge yesterday.

We now have written permission from British Dressage to compete in the full face net and nose net. Going to have to get a seriously bling browband to show through that lot.

Now need to figure out a freestyle routine - thought we might go with the Zorro theme....

Just wanted to add, wearing his kit, he has done jump training, arena event training, hacked and tolerated my attempts at dressage. Mild head shakers can be managed - they do not need to be layed off for most of the year.

Still claiming to be able to cure yet not advising other how to go about it, I would love to "cure" my horse, (though it is not possible to cure this syndrome only manage it) Your avoidance of the answer just makes everyone think you are a troll

:D and the fact that you insist on calling them" hair bulbs"! This does nothing for your credibility. :mad:
 
Yes, and I made the suggestion to you on another thread that if you genuinely want to help, ask people to PM you. Then you could explain the whole thing properly. Can I again ask what your credentials are, as it does not inspire confidence when you are so reluctant to answer that. Why would people want to "re-home"? Surely if their horses are cured they would be delighted and want to keep them!

And by the way.....they are called FOLLICLES!!! Not glands, or bulbs. If you want to appear professional , at least get the terminology correct!

Do you know, I think you could be right!:D. Pity really, it's been a joy trying to get any information from her, if you like pulling teeth that is. She doesn't exactly sell herself, does she?:p:p
 
Moets mummy why do you want to take other peoples horses on and apparently cure them when all head shaking cases are different and also headshake for different reasons flies and pollen etc. how do you justify how u can cure each case? Plus you can't cure a head shaker so what's the point in buying a horse you won't be able to sell as they have to have your so called treatment for the rest of your life which is not a cure
 
Hi

My mares a head shaker due to pollen/ allergies/ rape seed and I give her 3 x Mixed pollen tablets every day when the suns out and 3 x every other day on cloudy/ dull days. The tablets were bought from my local feed/ tack shop and are from Equus Health. They are a natural based product.

She wears a full face fly mask, has vaseline round her nostrils and I have also taken the nose band off her bridle and that seems to help her no end.

Touch wood these tablets so far seem to be working aa most of her symptons have almost stopped although do have to be really careful where we hack out coz if we go through or near anything pollen related then we seem to spend the rest of the hack throwing her head around and me trying to ignore it.

hope you manage to find something that helps your horse

Thanks for all your advise guys. At the moment she is ridden in just a fly mask no nose net now as I believe it restricts her breathing slightly as she seems a little bit snotty sometimes. The vet has prescribed her steroids (50 a day) and she is on NAF shake relief and NAF respirator boost . Let's see how it goes!
 
One of my girls has a twitch of sorts and I feel is pollen related. she only gets it in the summer months. My sister is well into homeopathy and I have tried mixed pollen and grass pollen and no joy, now got to get tree pollen as apparently it must be that one! - she isnt too bad luckily but it must be really irritating, like for us - so worth a go and if not, supplements - she hates vaseline so cant do that! be interested to hear everyone elses feedback as and when they try differerent things
