I've been taking a look at my own fitness and have been suggested that a heart rate monitor would help.

Applying the same logic to the horse who could also do with a fitness boost. Does this logic work? Does anyone use a monitor?

My sister used a heart rate monitor in her dissertation. She used a polar equine inzone FR1 heart rate monitor and didn't seem to have any problems with it. I think the readings were taken off a wrist watch. Not sure how much they are, she borrowed it from uni.

She did her dissertation on 3 commercially available equine calmers, one of the things she measured was heart rate during an exercise test.

She took resting heart rates and then at 3 min intervals during a control test and with one of the calmers. Heart rates were taken on 4 different horses at walk, trot, canter and fast canter. It was quite interesting.

We use polar monitors (racing industry) - simple, easy to use and the computer programme that goes with them is user friendly

Yes! I use a Polar Equine Inzone HRM for fitness work and it helps so much! There are loads of great books and articles on how to get your horse fit and understand what their HR should be at what point of the exercise...
I found I wasn't pushing my horse enough in his fast work and he was just cruising along, and needed to be pushing to get more work out of him.
There is a review of the one I have at http://strides-eventing.co.uk/2013/05/polar-equine-inzone-heart-rate-monitor/ if that helps! I think it cost about £100-£120.
Hope this helps.
