Has anyone attended any of Jim Mastersons training clinics? There are some being held in the UK this summer and was wondering if it's worth signing up for one. I've been going through his videos on YouTube and finding them interesting. :)

Any other suggestions about methods or trainers gratefully received :)

Hi TrasaM. I'm thinking about this. His technique looks great and I was recommended it by someone on here. Can't remember who I'll look up the thread.

I've started the EQ50 which is a recommend anatomy course ran by equinology. They look pretty good too. And I've also looked into Equine Touch. Ill have a look for the thread.

Thank you. I didn't see that thread either. I'm finding working (massage and stretching) on horse's really relaxing for me as well as them but could do with some proper guidance about signs to look out for and the correct technique.

I did a poll release on the TB yesterday who holds his head really high all the time and was amazed by his response ..very prolonged yawning and oh so relaxed and He went all doe eyed. Made me feel quite emotional :o
Looking at the Masterson videos it's along the lines of what I'm currently trying to do. I also found a useful website on the T touch stuff but am still reading through it all.

Have you looked at the dates and locations yet for the masterson clinics?

No not yet. I have done but didn't make a note of them. Tbh I'm not sure we can afford it at the moment and its not one of the cheapest courses to do. I'm looking at the ET course first I think as you can split it into a few courses and the level 1 is for horse owners and then you progress from there. Theres a few this summer by Emma Overend. Must remembr to email her actually.

Tempted to do the weekend course in June ... Bit nearer than Devon in September.

Better start brushing up on my horse anatomy or I won't know my ass from my elbow :D

ohh i am tempted by the weekend in Suffolk as it isn't too far from me. It is quite expensive though and I don't know if I can justify it really! I only share a horse at the moment and i doubt I will ever work with horses so earn money from it. Oh to be rich and be able to afford whatever you want!

Jim Masterson did one of his courses at my yard and although I wasn't taking part it was very interesting.
He kept all his participants interested looking and entertained (we have a few courses where people look bored ridged and disappear half way!)
First they watched him working on two horses then they chose their own horse to work on,Im not sure how long this group had been training but obviously a while too be allowed to work alone. He then spent time with each and wandered round giving advice and help as needed.
The other thing that struck me was how much the horses enjoyed it and chilled out. There are a couple of horses in particular at the yard who are quite grumpy sometimes a little aggressive characters and I did check up on the poor people doing them too make sure they were ok.....was amazed to walk in on very sleepy happy looking horses! Not a flash of teeth or cow kick in sight!
If its something I could afford id recommend training with him.

Thanks poiuytrewq. I think you've just helped me make a decision. It's lovely watching horse's when they respond like this :)

I mentioned the training weekend to OH and he suggested it as a birthday prezzie :D nice man OH :) And also grateful not to have to come up with present ideas of his own.

Now I need to just do it and not keep putting it off.

Daydreamer. I also don't own a horse yet, I also share, but I think my future with horses is going to involve training or some form of therapy. maybe see you in Suffolk ;)

I'm already booked on the Devon weekend :D

I heard about the MM via a forum last year, recommended by someone from another country who is very knowledgeable re bio mechanics and body work.

I looked into it and bought the DVD and book - loved the idea of working WITH the horse rather than just ON the horse.

I also have an earlier and more 'rough' DVD set (in terms of sound and edit) and it's just amazing to see the most difficult and stroppy horse suddenly reduced to a dopey mess :D

I have just completed the Equine Touch part 1 course this week and IMO the two modalities should work very well together.

ET works similar in that you are looking for cues from the horse and you give observation breaks for them to process what you've done.

I am amazed by how even my ham fisted early efforts at ET have induced relaxation - especially with my own who is really not a 'hands on' kind of guy. I did him loose in the field (when he was more interested in walking away and eating) and after 2 minutes he was no longer eating and the rest of the herd had moved away - yet he stood still and breathed deep. When I'd finished, he followed me all the way to the gate and stood watching me leave :p

I think I'm def going to do the et courses. Just need to get my arse in gear and get it booked. Unfortunately I can't afford both. If money were no object though I'd go my veterinary Physio masters, it's just thousands upon thousands of pounds. If I did that I'd never own a horse again lol. I'm currently still horseless.

Right I'm emailing now!! Thanks guys for kicking me into touch.

I've been wanting to do stuff for years but all my money went on Obi in his last years :o. Now he's gone, I have the cash and life is too short to waste on 'what ifs'.

The ET course was really nice - a good mix of learning and relaxation. Not too intense.

The students actually work on each other before going near a horse and you'd be amazed how addicted to it they got! There was a wave of dissension when the couches were loaded into the instructor's car on the last day :D.

I couldn't receive therapy myself, but I worked on everyone else and they seemed to enjoy it :D.

Oberon. We can compare notes :D Suffolk was nearer for me plus it's the man himself whos taking it. I've been practicing on my two shares as well. It's so rewarding but I'm looking forward to properly understanding what I'm doing at the moment and learning more. If it goes well I will probably sign up for the complete course next time. Wheeee ! Exciting.

Atlantis.. Look forward to hearing about your methods too :)

Oberon. I've not ordered the DVD or book yet. Are they an essential ?

Looked at ET.. Sounds like Alexander technique for horses.

I don't think they are essential (it was the closest I could get to a course at the time ;)). There is some information on YouTube for free :).

I can't comment on the Alexander Technique as I am not aware of what it is or how it works.

I do know the founder of Equine Touch (Jock Ruddock) was originally trained in Bowen, so I believe their methods are similar......

The June course clashed with the 9 days Myofascial Release I'm doing with Equinenergy this year :o.

I am looking at the 5 day Masterson Method course for next year :).

I did the advanced course last year and am now on the road to certifying (albeit slowly due to personal circumstances). I am already a Equinenergy bodyworker. You'll have a great time, Jim is great-a good horseman with a great sense of humour. Those who help in teaching are the same. Its a great technique and as far as costs go, I don't think its any more expensive than say ET to qualify-certainly cheaper than equine Bowen.

Motherofchickens do you think was the right way to do the equineenergy course first bin doing the eq50 which is good.

I've done the EQ50 and the EQ100 (although didn't persue the externship as it wasn't right for me at the time).

They were both excellent courses and really helped me get onto A & P.

The EQ100 is very good at getting you accepted onto other courses you might not be officially qualified for too :D

You'll have to talk me through how long and expensive it is to qualify with MM...I'd like to do it but I'm worried it would take forever :o.

I think doing the EQ50 is a good idea first, to give the basics of anatomy and get your head in learning mode! It's not necessary at all to do the EQ100 beforehand although, IMO it's (EQ100) is the best massage course you can do in the UK other than the Bromily one. It gives a good grounding in physiology and anatomy and is a reasonably rigorous course academically. The Masterson course is not massage (although there are some minor elements of massage and other modalities).

oh, do tell? (PM if you prefer). I did the externship-it was quite hard and not many seemed to have qualified from my course. The Masterson one I am happy to talk about via PM.

Ooh thanks Oberon. I think I need to have another look at everything to decide what to do first. I looked at ET as my old horse did so well with EMRT and its so similar to it, just takes considerably less time and money to train.

I don't know whether to just get a loan and do my masters though. Not sure I'd have the time though with work and my daughter, or whether I'm just being a wimp.
