my horse has mild laminitis caused the vet thinks by ems, he said to keep him in till bank holiday monday, however he is feeling very well and not lame, he has jumped the barrow out of stable and galloped of and is now running about getting all stressy kicking the stable walls, when are they allowed to do something, i was wondering about turning him out in hoof boots with pads, he doesnt wear shoes at the moment, hes bedded on shavings, having soaked hay, is there anything else i shoulg be doing, and have others had any joy turning them out aftter this. my field doesnt have a lot of grass at all.

My horse had this from a steroid injection . He was put on metformin as some days he would be better than others and made a complete recovery . Have you had your horse tested ?.If you havent that is the next step when there is no pain .I am ever careful . My horse is muzzled ,soaked to death hay etc . He is fed blue chip lami lite which is amazing .You haven't mentioned if your horse is overweight or not .

Just to add that the grass at moment is sugar rich as seems to be later this year owing to our rubbish weather. The shorter the grass the worse it is really as they are straight to the sweet bit .My horse goes out for 4 hrs max now but at thw start of his recovery it was half hour

thank you for your reply. he is not grossly overweight, the vet would like him to lose weight to try and help the general situation, the vet said he could test, but then treatment is the same as for laminitis anyway, as he is bilaterally lame anyway (well was) the vet would prefer to spend my money xraying his front feet. To be fair he was much better after one day and 100% better after day 2, I spoke to the vets and we decided to hoof boot and put him out in the arena as he was so frustrated. He is sound out like that.
now I just need to figure out what grass he can tolerate, i could put him out on long grass, but i think he will just gobble loads, I have fenced a very small area of his field off for him.
Actually the lovely farmer has said that I can turn him out on the farm track, but the grass is long and again it worries me. Although he will tolerate a muzzle.

If he is iinsured i would def x ray ,as you then have a comparison if it happens again . Otherwise if it does flare up again which is possible you will not know whats going on in feet.My boy does not go out without a muzzle i'm afraid it's that or not go out .Hope your horse is ok :)

i think its been rumbling on for weeks, after being kept in since wednesday he is better than he has been for a long time. thank you, he is allowed out tomorrow, so I have my finders crossed!! Think I am going to have him xrayed wether the insurance pay or not. I always worry until a claim is approved!!

My little welsh section A is on metaformin, you have to starve overnight and the vet does a blood test first thing in the morning. Depending on the sugar levels depends on the amount of tablets you give them. Mines had a couple of blood tests since to monitor the amount of tablets he should be on. The xrays are always worth while, my farrier thought he was trimming hard enough back until we had the X-rays done he is sound now and I manage to keep his laminitis under control with the help from the metaformin.
I hope you manage to get yours under control!
