Hi everyone - new to this forum though have followed it frequently in the past and found lots of interesting and informative input from members on lots of topics. Hoping someone can clarify my query regarding passports.
We recently bought a lovely 9y.o. thoroughbred from a private seller. They had him for about a year and bought him from a well known and respected dealer’s yard. He has a duplicate passport issued to the dealer just before he was sold. When he was vetted for us it was discovered that he has 2 microchips!! One UK which is on his passport. After internet investigations discovered his other one is French. Further research revealed lots of information including his correct date and place of birth, sire and dam and his breeder. We have also found 5 generations back breeding history. After all that, my question is, can he be passported with any POI that would include all this information? At present he is passported with PetIDEquine but they are only for ID purposes. Would really appreciate any help with this as finding it near impossible to find an answer on the internet.

I have an old mare who I bought (many years ago) with an ID passport (although the sparse details in it are correct) and I later discovered that she was originally passported with her breed society. What happened was her original passport had been lost and it was something like £50 at the time to get a new copy from the breed society, but only £20 to get a new ID passport. So of course the oil rich owner (or one of his staff) went for the cheaper option.

I would get in contact with the French passport office and buy a replacement of the original passport and then update it with your details ad the 2nd chip number too.

Thank you for your reply. I was thinking of trying to get him registered here but think your suggestion makes more sense. Just need to try and find the relevant governing body. I would also love to find out how he came to be bought by the dealer (without a passport!!). We have discovered he was with a British trainer and entered in a race but never took part. He is such a sweetheart don’t know why anyone would sell him.
