a friend's horse had it many years ago, it was post viral but not strangles related. Another friend has just lost her mare, started with a skin allergy and within 3 weeks lame in front leg, colic, protein in bloods, high white blood cell count, PTS yesterday
Vets are still baffled at cause. Wondered if above could have played a part. Vets commented that at the end the blood supply was failing to the leg in question.
Oh I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your friends mare, My gelding had a very itchy body...I couldnt work out what it was....tried everything on him, he went colicky - severe colitis, he had lost protein in his body, and very high white blood cells, vets tried everything, he was pts 3 weeks ago, so I totally understand what your friend is going through, give her my love.

We thought my mare had this when we nearly lost her 3 weeks ago but the newmarket tests came back as totoally negative for any growth of any strain of the stangles retaled bugs.
A friend's mare had it secondary to cellulitis apparently caused from a tiny scratch. Treated with large doses of steroids and made a good recovery. Apparently vets were perplexed as 4 horses had it at that yard within a few weeks of each other. I don't think there was ever a conclusion drawn about that though. This mare is now living with me and has another severe bout of cellulitis several months ago. This was treated with antibiotics and steroids, thankfully she didn't develop purpura haemorrhagica again.
I had a horse suffer from this & it was very scary particularly as none of the vets could decide what was wrong with him: he initially presented as unwell, slow coming down for his tea,( been fine at turn out in am) then didn't eat up which was VERY unlike him. Kept a close eye on him as he was off colour & later in eve noticed increasing pulse/resps. so called vet then very quickly limb & ventral oedema, he was admitted to hospital early hours am & he was retaining urine: catheterised nearly 1'5 gallons! poor boy. bloods showed very high white count & despite testing just about every piece of expensive equipment the vets couldnt agree what was wrong. broad spec antibiotics & IV steroids for 3 days & he was beginning to recover. But he had lymphanigitis & some of his hair & skin fell off( but not where the lymphangitis was) he was very itchy & had to be put back on steroids & NSAIDs for a while. Eventually he did get well: after hospital for a week & nursing for 3 weeks at home he was getting over it. He lost over 200kgs in first 3 days in hospital which was scary & took us another year to get him right, but then had to have him PTS the autumn after as he had heart attack in field which was very probably related to PH : endocarditis. We suspect it was from a strangles infection which had lain dormant in a hidden lymph node. Put him on Simple System to get his weight back & clivers & hawthorn & he had magnet boots when he was in for his circulation/filled legs. Bless him xxxRIP SAMSON
