My eldest son is due to sit his standard grades in just over a month, he really wants to be a vet, but his teachers are telling him he's not making the grades (I feel they should be giving him a push rather than dragging him down, he comes home like a wet weekend). Anyway I need to re-find his spark becasue as the moment he has got himself into a real slump, probably no different from any other 15 year old trying to study for exams. Anyway you are probably wishing I would get to the point, I am wondering if it is worth looking at maybe equine science as a fall back and was wondering if anyone has advice or experience that I can offer him. From a desperate mother!

I don't think his teachers are far wrong in saying that you need VERY impressive grades to do vet med. I know people with an impressive list of As who still didn't get in anywhere. Here at my college most of the vet med students I know have already done a degree in something sciencey - one friend I can think of did "Veterinary science", before now embarking on her vet med. That does add up to 8 years at uni, (and he's got the dreaded A levels to get to first) so you have to be truly committed, however if you want it bad enough.... Best of luck to him

Oh, and you may do well to post this on the careers board

My son was at hartpury and several of the equine science students who got a good degree went on to study to be vets. this gives you an alternative route into that profession.
