How much would you expect to pay? It's about an hours journey each way, plus the time it takes to get from their yard to ours... I though £110 + fuel, but I'm pretty sure it must be more.

Also, can you reccomend any local horse transporting services?

I don't know how much it would cost but give these people a ring, they are reliable and it's a brand new box and they are local

I'll just check that our friend with a horse box can't do it this week, and then I'll get mum to give them a ring

The authorities are stopping horse lorries and trailers due to the new DEFRA rules. Check who you are using that they have the legal requirements below.

The Legal Requirements

1 Operators Licence-either green (international) or blue (national only) discs usually displayed above the road fund licence. The discs have the operators licence number, expiry date, registration number of the lorry and the transporters company. You can check the validity of the licence number on www.vosa.gov.uk

2 DEFRA Licence-this is a licence given by DEFRA to show that we are competent at transporting horses. There are 2 types of Licence-TYPE 1 and a TYPE 2. A TYPE 1 licence shown as T1 on the licence only allows horses to be travelled up to 8 hours. The time is taken from when the 1st horse is loaded and the last horse has been unloaded. A TYPE 2 Licence is for over 8 hours and not more than 12 hours in UK only and a LONG JOURNEY CERTIFICATION is for over 12 hours and INTERNATIONAL. The transporter has to carry the new licence on board the lorry and the certification-there is also a metal plate (usually placed next to the chassis plate) on the lorry to prove that the lorry is legal for transport. You can get up to date information from:-
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welfare/farmed/transport/eu-transportreg.htm#journ

3 Hire and Reward Insurance-this is just a standard insurance required to transport for money-just like a taxi company has to insure for business use in case of an accident. This insures the lorry only and any third party vehicle-nothing else!!

4 Employers Liability Insurance-just as a shop has to have this so does a lorry. It insures you when you step on the lorry, any of your staff that travel with the horse etc.

5 Public Liability Insurance-this insures all equipment that you place on the lorry-such as tack, rugs, etc.

6 Care, Custody and Control Insurance-this insures horses on the lorry whilst in the care of the transporter.

CHECK WITH YOUR TRANSPORTER THAT THEY HAVE ALL 6 LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

ALL OF THESE DOCUMENTS MUST BY LAW BE CARRIED ON THE LORRY FOR CHECKING BY THE AUTHORITIES. A LEGAL TRANSPORTER WILL BE HAPPY TO SHOW YOU THESE DOCUMENTS.

YOU AND YOUR HORSE ARE AT RISK IF ANY ONE OF THE ABOVE ARE MISSING!

DO NOT USE THE TRANSPORTER!

I am a bit confuzzled here!

I am sitting here with a friend (ex OH to be precise!) who works in the horse transport business - and he says that foraday is incorrect. He says that

4 - employers liability insurance only covers employees of the company - not all people on the lorry, if they are not employees. He says that owner drivers do not have to have this.

5 - Public liability covers injury to people other than employees? He says that most transporters do not carry passengers - often because it is so easy to get accused of harassment or whatever. He also says that their terms are that tack etc. is carried at owners risk.

6 - Care Custody and Control insurance is NOT a legal requirement for a horse transport business. It is up to the owner of the horse to insure the horse in transit - that is why it is standard for horse transporters to ask that all horses are insured to travel. Whether you have care custody and control insurance is at your own discretion.

I must admit that if I hire a transport company I will check that they have an operators licence - but I have never asked them to show every insurance document that they carry. I have never got into a taxi and asked them either.

Are there any horse transport people out there that can confirm this?

Surely it is up to the various VOSAs, DEFRAs, police etc. that they keep a check on this. Looks like you are suggesting that the customer is responsible for everything!

Murphy was transported from Cheshire to South Wales for 250 (sorry pound sign not working) that was private (the dealer delivered for me) but that was a 5 hr journey, so I would expect your estimation was about right.

peanut equestrian are meant to be good? Google the name, as Idont know the site.

Think you might need to be careful putting operators no on a public forum. it can be misused. Thats why most companies don't show them on their own websites.

Think you will find average price is about £1 per mile for the round trip.

check out the website of the one dieseldog put up..their terms and conditions actually state what IS insured.

they have public liability ins also horse insurance.

very well covered IMO.

Yes,
He is correct on all counts.
Custody Care and Control insurance is NOT a legal requirement.
Employers Liability is only if you have employees
Public Liability is for any accident or damage caused to anyone OTHER than employees.
Some thing else to consider, if you are a transporter with a 4x4 and a trailer, VOSA cannot issue you with an operators license, because you can't have a Tacho on your 4x4. This doesn't mean you can't operate, you still have to have hire and reward ins, public liabilty, and every other insurance you can think of Plus the new SVS certificate for OVER 8 hours from the 5th January 2007.

P.S I am a Transporter

Thanks barkinghorse. My friend was right then. What he was annoyed about was that people might start thinking that he was illegal!

RHT - I was not making any reference to the company recommended by diedeldog. My post was in relation to the legal requirements in foraday's post - and as to whether or not people without these "legal requirements" are putting yourself and your horse in danger!
