Equipak gel pads

I have pads in my horses fronts - so have a large shoeing bill every 6 weeks. I wondered if anyone else uses this and has perhaps looked into buying the gel from the supplier direct - rather than the farrier providing it and then marking up the cost ?

A while ago - someone mentioned this - but i didn't get the details. Have looked on the web - but no luck.
I think the manufacturer is Vettec. Just looking to save some money where I can.
 
i'd be interested, my mare has them in, was charged £60 a pair, which i gather is quite reasonable though.
you'd need the applicator etc too though, and i'd worry that it might go off in the pack if left for too long once opened?
 
My horse had these for a while, mine were more than £60 a pair but I can't remember exactly how much.

I seriously considered buying the stuff myself and just having the farrier nail the mesh under the shoe.

You can buy it from farrier supply websites. Costs about £25 a tube, and you would need the applicator gun and probably the blue foam pads too. If you are lucky you will get away with 1/2 a tube a foot. Mine was a pain as need 3/4 a tube a foot so half a tube always ended up thrown away.
 
I was planning on supplying the gel only myself - obviously the farrier has the gun etc himself. But if not a saving or small probably not worth it. Given my shoes cost me about £160 every 6 weeks, I thought if I bought the gel in bulk - then that might offer a saving.
 
My farrier just charges me what the stuff costs him, the extra cost is for his time. I'm happy to pay as he does a good job, would be worried to do it myself - costly if you make a mistake and my farrier always ensures his feet are absolutely clean before the pad goes on so no foot problems - so far!!
 
When I used it last year and beginning of this, my Farrier charged me £25 which was what my vets were also charging. I have to say if I had been charged £60 I would definately have bought it myself!

As it was I have gone back to Impak pads, I believe they are as good as equipak and I can use them for 2 shoeings.
