My farrier has just been out (unbooked) as Sam is still lame (being treated for laminitis by vet) He was shoeing another girls horse and came to see how he was doing.
He suggested filling both front feet with equipak which he did after shoeing the other horse. Sams soles are quite flat, especially the near fore which is the one with the more severe pedal bone rotation and a keratoma, and he thinks this is making the problem worse
Just wondering if this is used much and how succesful it is....
Cost £80 for shoeing and equipak, which i dont mind paying if it is going to be of benefit to his lordship!

My farrier is great and even my grumpy boy loves his pedicures!

Dunno about equipak but maybe putting leather pads under the shoes would be cheaper and effective.

I used to ride a pony who had thin soles, navicular, slight foundering blah blah etc (etc - i.e was basically screwed) and had leather pads under his eggbar (+ lateral extention) shoes. They made a big difference to him. They were cheap too. Cost £10 from the saddler (where just thick flat circles of tough leather) and they could be reused. They were easy to put on too.

I use it on my flat footed TB. I have used normal pads up until using this. Normal pads as suggested are good, but they do create a very sweaty enviroment.

Since using Equipak my boy hasnt looked back, he even has heel now. Equipak has suited him far more than normal pads & the only reason that it could be is that Equipak dissperses (sp) the pressure more evenly because it's a rubbery when set.

IMO after using both types of pads i would now only preffer to use Equipak.

I think they would definately help him. Domi has thin soles and the last 21 weeks has worn pads under his shoes. He currently has the plastic/rubber pads fitted under the shoe, but I will probably move to the equipak as the field gets muddy as muck etc can collect under them, whereas with the equipak they are sealed. From the sounds of it they would help your horse.

Equi-pac is definatley the best to go for. It's expensive but they are really good. As my farrier says they are like nike's for horses!

Go for it ! Our big TB ginger boy was lame for a month before he put the equipak on a couple of weeks ago - instantly sound ! He only has it on the fronts as he's very flat-footed there. Farrier says about 4 shoeings and he should get much less flat footed and should only need the equipak over the summer months.
